Arizona State has quickly began to turn around there culture. The Herm Edwards hire was widely criticized but now is paying dividens for Arizona State. The formula is basically to hire and elite motivator and in game decision maker. Hire inovative coordinators who have deep recruiting ties to the region. Coordinators who have deep college roots, experienced recruiters, and innovative or at least modern schemes. Coordinators also have experience at multiple positions as coaches. The staff has young hungry position coaches. Staff also has some former NFL players as position coaches and analysts. Herm is the CEO he runs the tempo of practice and overseas offense defense and special teams. The run the program with a NFL managament style. Scouting department recruitng department and coaching staff all having there own independent roles overseen by the head coach. For the most part this model allows the head coach to mostly focus on game prep and and developing the players and coaches. Coaches were drawn in by the opportunity to work amd learn from a coaching legend with NFL pedigree. Herm probably makes a phone call and takes a picture with recruits from time to time but probably not as deeply involved. Coach Richt looks like he has aged a decade between last year and this year. Involved too deeply into some of the fine details. I personally hope with some staff changes in the off-season he can turn it around. If not( wont make staff changes or the wheels completely fall off the rest of the season) a guy I think could work is Mike Del Rio. Mostly successful NFL coach (no rings). Worked with and for some good NFL coaches. Respected in league circles. Has a son who is a highly touted recruit in a few years. Has something to prove after being fired from last job. Swagger. West coast guy who could open recruiting pipeline. I see post about a young inavative coach. I dont think thats what we need. Experinced head coach who can attract and inovative hungry staff.
