This is exactly what I think as well. Hence the overuse of Cover 1.

We've been loading the box and playing the run more so than the pass. Though I don't understand why you implement that strategy THIS YEAR with such a green secondary. Again, 80th in pass defense while the best passer we've faced so far is a true freshman QB that can't move past his first read. Would love an X's and O's guy to touch up on this a bit more.

Agreed.

My old head coach used to say: "one play can win a game, but one play NEVER loses it. You had 70 other chances to make another one the winner."
 
We allow like 2 yards per carry. So Ford and Bethel are doing their job.
We allow 260 yards per game.
Garvin has 22 qb pressures in 116 pass plays. Qb pressure rate of 5.3 plays (elite).
Clean up penalties and special teams and this is a top 5 defense right now because they would have allowed 14 less points on the season and won 2 more games.
Complain about whatever you want but Defense isn't failing. Part of defense is creating pressure to cause bad throws or punishing receivers across the middle to cause drops on the next series. So please don't tell me Garvin isn't getting sacks so he's failing, or that cmu dropped passes is why we won not our defense. Those things count. If the offense held up their end of the bargain nobody would be complaining about the defense.

Blake baker is not good imo and does not have same philosophy or approach that manny had. No methods to his madness other playing conservative as **** and not applying enough pressure when you have a young db group which they surely need.

don’t get me started on the 4th down conversions this year either

Yeah, I am pretty sure in other thread we addressed the complete success 4th down conversion rate against us so far, correct?

The staple of a Blake Baker defense so far has been playing cover 1 on first and second down, 3 down lineman with 3 safeties on third and fourth down while still allowing the offense to convert, infatuation with dropping Garvin to defend the flats and rushing 3, rarely blitzing, when blitzing sending a terrible blitz, and not understanding who his best defensive lineman are. If the defense continues as is as we enter ACC play I'm confident we will get smoked to a degree unseen since the Fat Al days.

I'll just mention that Manny's D looked like sht when he used to run zone, so I'm not sure that's the answer. Too easy for average QBs to pick it apart, especially since we aren't getting any pressure.

Got that. But I was really referring more to the group of DEs (Garvin, Hill, Patchan, Rosseau) that everyone touted all camp as some super group that was going to have an absolute field day vs opposing QBs all season. I can count on my hands how many times we've gotten pressure on the quarterback in 4 games, even against sh-tty opponents. And I don't think Garvin's gotten back there once.

100%. Because we KNEW the o-line was likely to struggle. Everyone (myself included) touted our DEs as being some incredible unit this year. Hands down the most disappointing personnel group based on preseason expectations. It's not even close.

Maybe not top 5 but a lot better than it's playing. My biggest concern heading into the season was how green the secondary is. I'm not surprised that receivers are running free more often. It's hard to get the penetration we need (without a dominate tackle) if you can't trust the CBs.

You can play the coulda, shoulda, woulda Game all day long on here. At some point you have to judge based on what actually happened.

If someone comes on here and talks about Mallory’s dropped two point conversion, the muffed punt, the miss chip shot field goals that make us 4-0 they are slammed as a blind homer.

That’s fine and I respect that because they didn’t get it done. But don’t turn around the next sentence and talk about plays other teams didn’t make.
