App State will probably be a tough game, at least for a half or so.

It's the week after Bama, and if we lose to Bama (especially by a lot) there will be about 47 people in the stands. With how dreadful the ACC TV deals are, it'll probably be a noon game on ACC Network. App State plays the previous Thursday in their opener, so they'll have an extra 2 days to prepare, and just like the time we went to Boone a few years ago, it'll be the biggest game in the history of their program. I'll be nervous before that one, regardless of how we play against Bama.

App st is probably a better team than most on our schedule. All jokes aside, I don't understand why ppl ignore them, besides conference bias.

They're probably the 8th or 9th best team on our schedule.

I have no idea what they have coming back this year, but they went 9-3 last year and their only losses were to Marshall (started the year 7-0), Louisiana (Only lost 1 game and it was by 3 points, beat Iowa State), and Coastal Carolina (Undefeated and lost their bowl game in OT). So App State is always solid. But they'd be a bottom third ACC team. No reason we should lose, but it might be close for a while depending on motivation....it'll literally be their Super Bowl as a program and how excited will we be coming off the Bama game? Might be interesting.

"Most" was a bit hyperbole. Looks like a returning QB, but young online. In the mid 40s for returning production.

I didn't actually understand the OP or what exactly he was getting at unless it was just to talk about App State, but if you go by pre-season FPI*, App. State is actually the 6th best team on the schedule. Alabama, UNC, VT, UVA, and NC State are high ranked (in that order). Meanwhile, Forfeit State, Pitt, Michigan State, GT, Duke, and CCSU are all behind App State (in that order).

For future conversations with Forfeit State fans/alumni you may be forced to interact with, please note that putrid team is ranked behind App State.

* I don't like FPI as a metric generally, and I especially don't like it before games are played, but it's the only thing I could readily find that ranks all these teams. And it has the benefit of having Forfeit State ranked behind App State, so I like it a little better now.

Boone used to be a cool town until it sprawled all over Watauga Co. Go an hour north to Damascus, VA for a better mountain experience (Appalachian trail and Virginia Creeper bike trail meet there).

We were talking about our other non-conference opponents, so I figured we talk about the final one. I was joking about our FCS opponent. I prefer sp+ and Bill Connelly has them at 35 with Vatech at 36. MSU and FSU at 59 and 61, for reference.

Third toughest team we face by preseason SP+ rankings? That's interesting.

There were not a lot of interconference match-ups last year. That may throw off the numbers. I am not sure that app is truly the third toughest team. Our players should be on a different level athletically.

Appalachian State Mountaineers

App State was still mostly App in Shawn Clark's first year in charge, but ill-timed glitches meant three frustrating losses. Revenge tour in store?

2021 Projections

Projected SP+ rank:
35th

Projected record: 9-3 (6-2)

  • Likely wins*: ULM (98% win probability), Elon (97%), South Alabama (95%), Georgia Southern (86%), Marshall (84%), at Arkansas State (84%), vs. East Carolina (83%), at Georgia State (73%)
  • Relative tossups: at Troy (65%), Coastal Carolina (57%)
  • Likely losses: at Louisiana (35%), at Miami (21%)
Road trips to Miami, Louisiana and Troy could prevent a run at 12 wins, but 2020 could still be outstanding if a new QB sticks.

What we learned about App State in 2020

Even four-time defending champs can glitch. Two red zone turnovers against Marshall, three bad minutes against Coastal and a missed chip-shot field goal. That's what separated the Mountaineers from a perfect record. Louisiana and Coastal Carolina justifiably stole all sorts of headlines in 2020, but App State came within just a few bounces of remaining atop the heap.

The run game still hums. The trio of Camerun Peoples, Daetrich Harrington and Nate Noel combined for 356 carries, 2,229 yards and 22 TDs, and App State ranked 18th in rushing success rate. With star wideout Corey Sutton opting out, they lacked a little in the explosiveness category, but Sutton and all of 2020's wideouts are back, as are all three RBs.

So does the pass defense. App State ranked first in passing success rate allowed and fourth in passer rating allowed. The run defense was merely fine, but the pass rush was good and the secondary was otherworldly. Corner Shemar Jean-Charles led the country in passes defensed, and App allowed a 48% completion rate with 15 INTs. Now 10 defensive starters return.

What we didn't learn about App State in 2020

How much of the pass defense was due to Jean-Charles? He's gone, but everyone else returns, including safeties Kaiden Smith and Ryan Huff and disruptive front-seven guys in end Demetrius Taylor and linebacker D'Marco Jackson.

Is there a smooth transition at QB? Three-year starting quarterback Zac Thomas is gone, as are last year's backups. The starting job will be Clemson/Duke transfer Chase Brice's to lose. He struggled captaining a mostly hopeless Duke ship last fall; can he find a groove in a far more positive situation?

App State's history in one chart

Bill Connelly/ESPN
  1. The best year of App State's first top-division stint came in 1975, when they beat Wake Forest and South Carolina on the way to an 8-3 finish.
  2. After averaging 4.2 wins per year over their last five seasons, the Mountaineers joined the rest of the Southern Conference in dropping to what was then called 1-AA.
  3. The Jerry Moore era (1989-2012): 10 SoCon titles, three national titles (2005-07) and one very, very famous win over Michigan.
  4. The Mountaineers began FBS life 1-5 in 2014. But they won 17 of their next 19 under Scott Satterfield, and they were off and running.
  5. Despite three head coaches in three years (Satterfield, Eliah Drinkwitz and Clark), App has finished in the SP+ top 30 for three straight years as wel

Let me be serious--for just a brief moment--You don't take anybody lightly. I remember seeing some of our best teams play down to the level of inferior opponents. We have had a history of that for years. We've had some scares over the years.
