Apart from health, what changes/improvement do you want to see after the bye week

I love it. Thornton is just the next guy fans are directing all their hate toward. What’s going to happen? He’ll come out of the bye and be a huge part of the defense in the second half of the year.
If you can’t tackle you can’t play. Every broken play from a missed tackle this year seems to start with him.

Is that going to magically improve? Maybe it will. Hopefully it does.

Thornton has been beaten a few times, so there's more to it; still Wesco can play and put a dirty move on him. Sometimes you just need to give credit where it's due. When X comes back I do hope we move Fitz back to nickel so Omar can be more of a situational player.

Exactly. The Lofton 1 min cut up has sent shockwaves through the fan base & now the sentiment by vocal fans is he’s being underutilized. Was a punchline 2 weeks ago

Downfield passing game, outside of Malachi Toney (including him against Clemson other than the one called back)

2nd half of Wake and Clemson full game it was nearly non-existent.
We're one of the lowest in 20+ yard attempts. below is taken from ESPN play by play and compiled by chatgpt.

Have to figure out a real coverage scheme.

Better teams will break thru it for TDs.

If we allow any team to throw, plus FSUs running QB, things could get bad.

More 4 wide.

Echoing @skyman, @JayCane20, and @dudenate, we need to start stretching the field through the air against conference foes. I would be surprised if Mensah's FBS ADOT is much different from Beck's last year, and Mensah was one of the best deep ball passers in the country last year. While it's cool that Mensah is completing 85% of his passes, that number is also an indicator that we aren't trying to stress the defense downfield enough. I am all for efficient QB-play, but you really shouldn't be completing passes at such a high rate, and no other QB with 100 attempts is above 75% this year.

It's partly a function of trying to protect the new OL holding up in pass protection (where they are weakest) long enough to stretch the field. Everything is held back a level downfield because of that. We are keeping our backs in to block much more, thus they have barely been factors in the passing game against ACC foes. I haven't watched too closely, but I would guess Lofton is hanging out on the line a bit longer than is ideal with how well he is playing as a receiver. Upshaw's long reception is for 21 yards and he's averaging just 9.9 yards/reception. Jacobs has been less existent than Sam Brown, which needs to change ASAP. Wingo is the most obvious candidate for more snaps, but I don't think the Earth will stop spinning if we try Spafford and Toney on the field at the same time.

Similarly, we need to manufacture some explosive run plays beyond the inevitable Fletcher/Mallory going beast mode late in the game against an exhausted opponent. Probably should be a combo of reverses/jet sweeps to Toney leveraging off Fletcher/Mallory success running between the tackles, and simply giving Pringle and Lyle a few more carries each game.

There's no reason to go full carnival trickster mode this year, but the complete absence of the Malicat package this year has been an overcorrection, IMO, and its reintroduction could help us manufacture more explosive opportunities on offense.

• Tackling
• Penalties
• Congdon should start at LG
• Cantwell needs to be cross training more at RT
• Continued development of the younger players especially at WR, TE, LB, and CB. One of them is going to have to make his self shine because we need a bigger bodied and taller WR to step up - Wingo. We need size(pause) at the position. Same goes for TE. We know what Lofton is. I want to see Mueller step up more. Can guys like Portis, Jennings, Waters, Ewald, or Mack step up at CB with all these injuries. We have to get Thornton out the nickel spot and Fitz back to his normal position.

More consistent oline play, picking up stunts and blitzes better

Better separation vs man coverage for every wr besides mali. This will determine the ceiling of the offense, I haven’t been impressed by this wr core like I thought i would be but its very early and we have still produced

Better tackling on defense. Better contain on the qb

-Get more creative with Mali to keep teams honest

-move the pocket more for Mensah

- Thornton move to left bench

- wingo needs more snaps
More combos with other players + decoys freeing up people vs. trick plays Dawson falls in love with.

+ clean up tackling
+ clean up penalties
+ avoid the continued pattern of the disappearing offense

Ik we've said it for the last decade about our OCs keeping things vanilla til later in the season, but Dawson truly does open it up as the season progresses.

I dont quite think we are at that point yet where he flips the switch but Id expect to see more explosion as we march toward December.

The problem i saw with Thornton (i say this as a casual observer who isn't an X's and O's expert) is that his speed is both an asset and liability. He over pursues and goes for the big hit, which takes him out of the play. That missed tackle against Wesco could have been avoided had he slowed up a bit and squared his shoulders instead of going for the kill shot.

Penalties.

Last year our most dominant game in relation to competition was Ohio State because we didn’t have any penalties.

Cristobal teams are super physical on both sides of the ball which holds up well in the playoffs. Last game was so encouraging because we played so physical on the lines and that last drive of just runs was *chefs kiss*.

If we can limit the penalties this team has the star power, depth, and physicality to beat any team.

I’d appreciate less easy access throws but I understand it’s our scheme and is doing well overall.

Everyone seems to have an obsession with seeing Cantwell at RT just cause he's a name despite every evidence that he isn't ready and is going to need more time. Which probably makes sense given he played in a tiny state with crap competition. McCoy has been doing a really good job and we are bringing other guys along at guard.

All of the above post and unless we’re down and need Mali magic, please find others to handle returns. The kid comes out once a game cuz hes getting dinged up like crazy.
