I agree with this. The high school football I watch a dozen times or more each season is much softer than it used to be. Nobody here wants to hear that. Meanwhile, the early season results in intersectional matchups hint at it. I'm convinced if Dade County powers played a series of games against more rugged opponents from outside the state, instead of an isolated game here and there, the results would not be close to what conventional wisdom allows.
The recruiting focuses on individual players, which doesn't always correlate to whether or not the style of play is tough and resilient. After watching those high school games I expect the South Florida kids to want the easy way out, and to mostly surrender when it's not going that way. That's the way the high school games unfold. It is generally open space spread offense with lots of waltzing touchdowns and tons of undisciplined penalties. Defense and physical is not a major priority, other than an occasional exception like that South Dade team from a couple of years ago.
Defensive tackles are a joke. You can choose between not good enough or plenty fat enough.
I'd prefer a mixture of South Florida skill guys with linemen and linebackers and even safeties from elsewhere, or a blend of here and elsewhere. I'm always jealous of programs like Ohio State and Alabama with so many naturally tough wide body guys. Clemson looked like that. I think they had 5 or 6 guys from Florida.
OSU most physically imposing player imo is from FT.Lauderdale...(Bosa).....Clemson most physical/athletic specimen probably on their team is a former um verbal commit (Jayron Kearse 6'4-220 pd safety) from Ft. Myers.
We have a bunch of wide body guys who arent sh*t...look at our oline....Our dline as well....we need a new S&C as ive been caling since 2008-2009....Swasey is grat with the skills...but if big guys arent coming in ready made he has no clue. Our guys that put up great numbers strength wise at combine...CAME into UM like that imo.,
I'm a fan of hitting these areas hard..Because i believe we can land 1-3 prospects yearly that we cherry pick:
New Orleans,La and usrrounding metro- We have a name in the area..(Ed Reed, Laron Byrd, Reggie Wayne,Standish Dobard) a few others. Naturally those area kids fit in with the miami city life nad are drawn to it as it differs from the NO. I feel we need to head back there alot..we can cherry pick guys, and even go to war with LSU for some
Atlanta, Ga and metro- These kids are closest as far as city life as Miam is. Big City kids..cheap flights, back and forth. Has good area talent...and Richt does a nce job of not locking up that area or not being able to because of the abundance. Alot of transplants with no allegiance to any school actually as well. We got Kirby from Stephenson and never went back there which was crazy to me. Wide open area..where we can scrounge dl,lb,ol from on a yearly basis. All of the SEC are hitting the area now.
New Jersey- Know yall hate to see it...BUT....Jersey's high level players produce imo. I thought we wouldve seen more from Al of getting the big dogs from the area but guess not( he seemed to be saving guys for penn state, i felt he wanted that job from jump). I would offer every 5 star guy in the nj area.. They LOVE MIAMI....and their high level guys produce...Look at the two we have this year in NJOKU, Jenkins who re contributors.
DALLAS,tx - Our name is big out there..beause of Jimmy and Cowboys succes with Miami Guys....open season now in the area....Baylor,TCU, oREGON..WE SHOULDVE THROWN our hat back in TX along time ago..but guess we dont have the hs connections. Randy somewhat did.
Southern Cal- Specifically for QB'S, and OT's. I would just recruit those two positions in the so cal area...The passing game is more advance in california..so qb's are ready to go...and OT's also as they have more experience in pass pro and schemes.
* The rest is all south, fla (DADE,BROWARD,PALM) and then im sw fla...(Tampa/ftmyers/Bradenton)....Cherry pick the rest of the states elite.
Thats with me as a coach or recruiting coordinator. In my opinion thats the formula for success.
