Anyone else sad that the Paul Johnson era at GT is over?

Really surprised we haven't again had the pleasure in this thread of seeing the picture of GT on the 1 yard line and our defense in a 3-4 with half of the defenders 5 yards into the end zone.

They will at best recruit in a top 30-40 range. They won’t get recruits any of the surrounding sec schools or Top 3 acc schools prioritize in the state of Georgia(there’s like 5 power 5 universities within 3-3:30 hours of metro Atlanta.). Sleeping giant? I doubt It just because the limitations on getting the best talent in the state. Will always struggle to even get the 2nd- 3rd rate recruits in Georgia

Maybe they build something but they won’t be bringing in the best talent in Georgia or anything close to it.

They’ll be much better, long-term, than they’ve been. Pretty much the debate of the thread. So I get what most of you guys are saying as far as hating to play against them due to the cut blocks and them bleeding the clock, but their program overall will be better with him gone and them now able to sell a real offense on GA athletes. That’s undeniable. So, him leaving is bad for Miami and the rest of the ACC. Not “Oh my god GT will be Bama and Clemson combined” bad. Sleeping giant is a little ridiculous. But they’ll have better players going forward, so that’s not good news for their opponents. But it’ll still take a couple years for Collins or maybe even the next coach to get them into this century. They’re going to be pretty bad this season.

People once said the same thing about us and we all know how that happened. Hence sleeping giant title as the right coach with early results and then some time could turn them into a power.

For those of you born before 85, you may remember pj at airforce a couple years before leaving to gt when he beat a pretty good notre dame team. I remember watching that game intently. He had that triple option humming on all cylinders causing chaos in that ND defense. I was loving every second of it as my diehard ND stepmother from PA was cursing a storm in other room. I'm not gonna lie. That was one of the most impressive triple option clinics I've ever seen and loved it. When pj got to gt I wasn't so excited. Glad that cut block clock eating scheme is dead.

Our problems with him, like any other enemy, has to do with us not them. When we are right, no one has much of a chance against us.

we should continue to beat them by winning in the trenches, they've been recruiting o lineman to basically run block (option block) since paul has been there. the switch will probably be hard for them for a while until bigger o lineman get there

I'll miss the almost guaranteed W on the schedule every year.

Prior to PJs arrival, the Jackets held a 9-4 advantage in the all time series vs our CANES.

PJ was 3-8 vs the CANES.

I will forever be thankful to PJ for allowing the CANES to even up the series at 12 wins a piece.

Good thing we got Willie at FSU now to pick up where PJ left off in handing us a guaranteed W every year.

Here's hoping Willie wins at least 8 games this year and earns an extension on his contract.
Speak for yourself. I was nervous as **** during the Golden years when we had to face GT. The "read & react" defense is not a good counter to the triple offense.

My favorite memory of the Paul Johnson GT years was when one of our defensive players flipped their RB, feet towards the sky. I don't remember the year but it had to be before Marlins Park bc I remember the baseball diamond still on the field. Im glad we don't have to live like that anymore lmao

GT actually has potential with the right coach imo. I put them on the same level as Maryland as far as potential.

People think they won't be able to recruit bc of their academic standard but Stanford was the 18th most talented roster in 2018. One spot behind The U at 17. Georgia is up there with Cali in terms of HS prospects too. Big potential at GT.

Edit: think about that. Miami was the 17th most talented roster in 2018. The next closest team in the ACC was like UNC at 30 something. Yet we are unable to make the ACCCG but Pitt could with the 35th most talented roster. Coaching smh.

It’s not just because of their academic standard that they won’t recruit well. Look at the surrounding schools.

They Will never get a recruit that uga wants as well as many of these schools in close proximity that prioritize guys they are recruiting in metro Atlanta.
Bama 2.5-3 hours away
Tennessee 3:30 hours away
Clemson 2:00 hours away
FSU 5 hours away
Uga 45 minutes away
Auburn 1 hour away
South Carolina 3 hours away or so if that.

For reference uf is the closest power 5 school from Miami and that’s what 5 hours away?

I'm not saying they have a chance to recruit at a national championship level. They have potential to recruit in the 30's for sure and maybe crack the top 25 every few years.

They're never going to outrecruit UGA, you're right about that. But there's way too much talent in GA to think their recruiting offensively won't improve considerably. I think GA is the 3rd best state in the country for football talent. If you prove to those kids you can run an offense that was designed this century, you can really recruit there.

And don't forget, yes, those schools are close. But this is IN ATLANTA. It's a very appealing city for GA kids. I think a lot of you guys are selling GT short.....George O'Leary was 11-14 in his first 3 years there...and then went 41-19 the next 5 years. I'm not saying they're going to start competing for the playoffs or anything, but GT was a total afterthought under CPJ. He'd have an occasional good year, they won the ACC once, the Coastal 3 times, and finished in the top 10 once with an Orange Bowl win....but over a 10 year tenure, he only finished the year ranked 3 times. That's pretty ****** for having access to the talent he did. I can see GT turning into a perennial ranked team if they get competent coaching.

Wouldn’t disagree with that, they should get better recruits seeing that they are switching from a option offense but not sure it will be enough though. We will see

I never liked the dude but GT never really worried me. It will be interesting to see how the new coach recruits at GT. Looking forward to him rustling Kirby on the recruitinng trail. Finaly, UGA has to contend with someone for in-state recruits.

Hated that sh*t, made your offense have to be perfect because you won’t get many possessions vs them

mehhh

if it's that good, teams would still be running it. If ga tech's sorry talent could do that, imagine clemson or bama
