I am considering transferring jobs from Alaska to Oregon. I tried to watch youtubes to get a feeling of Oregon life. Its safe to say I went to the comment section of youtube and the creators were getting dragged lmao. I have kids who play sports. My girl twins are good vball players, and my son is a talented football player (freshman). I am thinking of them in regards to moving out of Alaska and getting them exposed to colleges. Any info on Oregon would help. If you know of any good high schools as well for sports. Thanks in advance 🤙🤙🤙.

I grew up in Oregon. Happy to answer questions. Regarding which HS is best for sports, it depends on which specific sport. For football and basketball, in general, it will be the high schools in the Portland area/suburbs (Central Catholic, Jesuit, Lake Oswego, West linn ). Sheldon (Eugene) is good for FB. For wrestling, Roseburg (southern Oregon).

Nice. And i was wondering what area those were in (CC, Jes, LO, and WL). I just youtubed the football championships and saw those teams in it lol. I would like to live outside of Portland and drive my kids to school lol. I'm from the islands and like my space. Any thoughts on Gresham, Mt Angel, or Oregon City as places to live.

Something to consider is taxes, I believe Oregon has an 8% state income tax.
But if I recall, their sales tax was low. I seem to recall a military friend saying a bunch of retirees he knew lived in WA, but shopped in OR to save money.

Thats true, forgot about that.

Non-Oregonian here--I have some dealings of a personal nature with this place and my recommendation is to avoid.

I just moved to WA State a couple years ago after living in Oahu for 12 years (Kaneohe then Ewa Beach - the Tagaviolas lived a few blocks away).

Never spent any time in Mt Angel or Oregon City. Ive been to Gresham, but way back in the 1990s. All of Portland and the burbs seem like they are on a different planet now.

As with any big city, you can find places with lots of space but the commute is probably going to suck.

One idea to consider is living on the WA side of the border. A bunch of my friends live in Vancouver, WA (just north of Portland) and commute to Portland.

I think you mentioned Lake Oswego, that was where the rich folk lived. So I'm guessing it's still pretty nice. Btw, a number of those high schools in Portland with good sports like Jesuit and Central Catholic are private. So be prepared to pay a college tuition if you send your kids there.

A decent area with good quality of life is Hillsboro. Not sure about the HS there. West Linn is a nice area and as discussed, has a HS with good sports. And it's a public school, so thats a bonus.

Oregon is a great place to live, especially if you live in a red part of the state (basically everywhere else in Oregon outside of Portland and Eugene).

Ah thanks braddah. West Linn sounds like the place. I also have family in Vancouver. That might be something. Is Hillsboror and West Linn a part of Portland/Eugene?
