Frank Gore, Vince Wilfork final two standing from Miami's glory days
And then there were two.
The retirement of receiver Andre Johnson, who was with Indianapolis in 2015, has left Colts running back Frank Gore and Houston Texans defensive tackle Vince Wilfork as the only two players still playing in the NFL from the glory days of the University of Miami's football program in the early 2000s.
“That’s it,” Gore said. “Think about all the guys who played together around that time. We were all blessed to have great years. Vince is still playing at a high level.”
Gore, Wilfork and Johnson played at the University of Miami when the Hurricanes were turning out multiple first-round draft picks on a regular basis, players such as Willis McGahee, Clinton Portis, Ed Reed and Jeremy Shockey.
The list goes on and on.
“I just think we’re a different breed,” Gore said. “We competed. We saw the guys before us and we wanted to be them. Wanted to make them happy and keep the legacy up with the ‘U’ guys before us. We saw guys like Michael Irvin, Warren Sapp, Ray Lewis, Reggie Wayne and Edgerrin James making it in the league.”
Johnson, who spent the first part of this season with the Tennessee Titans, retired this week. He was 10th in the NFL in career receiving yards (14,185), ninth in career receptions (1,062) and was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection.
Gore is adamant that Johnson would have put up even better numbers had he played with better quarterbacks during his 12-year career with Texans
Johnson caught passes from the likes of Matt Schaub, Case Keenum, T.J. Yates, Matt Leinart and eight other quarterbacks during his time in Houston.
“That lets you know how special Andre is,” Gore said. “That’s a Hall of Famer. He never had a top guy under center all those years in Houston and he's still a top-10 receiver. That’s big. Look at some guys with the numbers they put up around him and look who their quarterback was.”
Gore has rushed for 532 yards and two touchdowns this season. Wilfork has 16 tackles this season for Houston.
