Alonzo and Eric Winston and wtf? Zo is from Canada?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wally_Highsmith

Back in the day, Syracuse has a WR from Canada. I think his name was Kane. Alonzo must have known him from Canada. Story was, that Alonzo stopped talking to him when he selected Syracuse over Miami.

Yes, Walter Highsmith had three different periods when he played in the CFL. He was born in Florida, though.

I was at Columbus my junior year in 1981 when word started spreading around that there was some stud player that was going to come to school the following year

We were all like, “ a stud from Canada?!!”

Anyway, he shows up my senior year and the guy was just dominating. But he was a DL and he was unblockable.

We all assumed he was going to be the next LT, who was just starting out in the NFL.

To this day many still say that Schnellenberger messed up by switching him to RB because he was special and pure nasty on D.

Aneurysms while typing are a medical plague around here.

As far as Zo the Canuck, wait until people find out his only real concern is elevating our fledgling ice hockey program to a scholarship giving powerhouse AND finally bringing quality poutine to South Florida in a partnership with Sherko and Richard Mercier.

I don’t know if Howard messed up by not keeping him on defense. But I do know that Jimmy messed up by not feeding him the ball in the Fiesta Bowl.

Great watch, thanks for sharing, OP. I hate and respect the Semenholes, but I hate the Gaytor, just like they both do. Can I get a "**** YA from the CANES!"

If you watch that video, when the team walked out of the cowboy bull**** they got a lot heat. They interview JJ and he says "I was ready to leave too. I was was right behind them." That is a COACH that stands up for the team, heat be damned! That team would walk through fire for JJ.
Manny....not yet, anyway.

Jimmy Johnson all but said that. He actually said, "Can you imagine having Danny Stubbs and Alonzo Highsmith at the ends? Whew!"

That was an exact quote from Jimmy. He would never have moved Highsmith from defense.

Schnellenberger was an offensive coach who let Olivadotti run his old passive 5-2 defense. Probably never saw the potential for Alonzo on defense.

Found out the other day Ted Hendricks is from Guatemala

I think his mom was Guatemalan, his dad American. If I recall, his dad worked in the airline industry..... back then lots of folks in Hialeah worked at nearby Miami airport....I believe that is how the Allison family of stock car game ended up down there as well as one of them was an airplane mechanic.

Yeah, he definitely looked up to Hugh Green who wore no.99 at Pitt....Highsmith was all over field....your team was on local tv back then, channel 17, with Soldinger often providing analysis of games when he wasn't coaching. You guys got alot of air time because Mike Shula was the QB but Highsmith was the most impressive..you also one of the Griese kids on the team as well as Toby Lantz whose dad was UM DC during early 1980s....there was a very good DE/OLB who bookended Highsmith (last name Palmer) who I believe ended up at Alabama......sorry for the old man geezing, just remembering the era.
Thanks for sharing your story!

Yeah, Toby was in my class. We had a ton of Miami Dolphin connections as well. Also, on that D was Marc Buoniconti, who was going to be a lot better than his brother Nick(class of 82) and might have had an NFL career.

But he was wild and crazy and barely graduated. Plus, living in Miami in the early 80's did not help. That is why his father Nick sent him to the Citadel, which turned into one of the really tragic events that I can remember.
