All the boxes seem checked..but there is an elephant in the room...

Played prevent beginning halfway through 3rd quarter. That’s how.

There’s ~16 year one transfers in the 2-deep this year alone not including the 2 kickers and a long snapper.

He’s going to pull another: QB, RB, WR, TE, LT, C, RT, DE, DT, ILB, NB, S, PK, LS this off-season.
Of those 16 transfers in the two deep 5 of them are eligible to return. I agree with QB, NB, PK, DT and DE, but in my opinion there are enough potential returners with experience to not need to add transfers.

Possible returning players and commits

  2. Jordan Lyle JR
  3. Chris Wheatley-Humphrey RSO

The defense isn’t all that. They don’t consistently get pressure.
I’m not investing the time or energy to find it. But I’d bet our opponents have a very quick snap to pass time. ND basically nuked their run game for quick screens. A DL of Reggie White, Aaron Donald and Myles Garrett ain’t getting pressure on one step drops.

I think game one was a product of it being game one. Miami was rolling out a new defense with 6 transfers starting as well as Norte Dame rolling out a QB that had no college tape to study.

The play that got them back in the game was a busted coverage by Toure and Thomas, two guys who didn’t arrive until summer. Secondly Miami simply did not think Carr would run the ball and they were not prepared for it.

The big difference between week 1 defense and the defense that will face Florida this Saturday is experience in the system and enough game tape on DJ and Florida’s to know exactly how to stop them.
.
We also have to give some credit to ND. It’s not like they are a bad football team. Even with the new QB, 99% of this board would’ve taken under 350 yards of offense and 24 points allowed.

Obviously gotta clean some stuff up. It’s not a flawless defense, but this narrative some are spewing that it’s not good is weak imo.

Brown looks too slow to be the guy. Lyle and Pringle are yet to show they’re ready for the load Martinez and Fletcher can carry. Will Lyle play this year?

Lofton et al have done nothing yet. They’ll want a proven vet blocker in there.

Two OTs w/o starting experience?

Trader even going to be here?

Rodriquez ain’t it at C. They’ll want someone with starting experience, clearly.

ILB is going to come down to Chase Smith? Nope. Portal.

They’ll sign a S that can tackle.

And I’m not saying avoid the portal. It just looks like another dozen+ guys v 4-5.

You guys are already looking to next season? This board is the absolute worst at times

You wasted your time replying to a post you didn't want to read. What's that make you?

The offense in the 4th Q vs Notre Dame had 3 consecutive drives for a total of 6 yards before the final drive to win the game. And with those 6 yards of offense, we managed to get a FG off an interception thanks to the Defense. I think Beck and this O are in a better place today but let's not put all the blame on the D for that 4th Q vs ND.

Mario’s fault there. Burned through bad DCs (so far so good w CH) and Portal Kombat over development seems to be his game.

Hope Hetherman stays + MC relies more on program guys with 1-2 transfers sprinkled in + with Feld gone development improves.

Mario's Game is getting the best talent Via Portal recruiting or Highschool recruiting and developing smart hard nosed players. All positions except for DB seems to have the perfect mix of "homegrown talent" and Portal players. He has struck out at DB in High-school recruiting, of course he'd restock by using the portal. We should be happy about the "whatever it takes" approach Mario has for bringing in talent.

We got away from complimentary football against ND. We got incredibly conservative and kept putting the defense back on the field when it was clear the ND offense was settling in somewhat. It also didn't help that the referees missed about 3 holding and PI calls which would have extended our drives.

We obviously played not to lose on both offense and defense. Played the time game and it worked. That’s all that matters

I have been looking for progress. First games can be messy. Have they, as a defensive unit, gotten better overall since game one?

If I remember correctly, most prognosticators (with a few exceptions), has us losing to ND. We won. Defense was good enough and shut down ND's offense on their last drive.

I would love to see us dominate UF the same way we handled USF.

Go CANES!!

UF def. Only 2 TD given up.
We had a long conversation about this in the Gator tears thread the other day. UF’s defense isn’t that great, they just haven’t played very good offenses. LIU’s offense isn’t even available in the rankings, USF’s is 86, and LSU’s is 94.

Also, USF’s defense performed better than UF’s, and we already saw how our offense played against USF’s defense.

The media is saying UF has a good defense because it’s just part of their SEC spiel. But if you really take a look (like I said, we got into it more in the other thread), their defense is not good.
