I wrote an article for LifeWallet Sports about how this is the most critical year of Mario's tenure:
Ultimately I think he will turn it around this year but If he has another 5/6 win season that plan might be in peril. Thoughts?
If they hoist that trophy after a 15-0 season you bet your *** it worked. That would give Miami a top two class with every DT in the world possibly gives u Brandon Baker, Jeremiah Smith and Ellis Robinson as a starter pack. Not to mention the NIL investors are gonna pour money like crazy and then the Big Ten will come calling for us. On that alone he takes this program to another level.5-6 Ws would be disappointing, but doesn't put his plan in peril.
We won't know how his organizational methodology works out until Y4/5.
And yes, that includes if Miami goes 15-0 and hoists a natty this year.
Yeah. The transfer portal has sped up that process. If we want to get out of the ACC we also need to improve on the field and give the SEC/ BIG Ten a reason to bring us in. With an 8-9 win season you pretty much secure that as well. Thanks for sharing. I know some have said it could take 5 years, including last year, to turn things around. But you brought up an interesting point that I really hadn’t thought much about.
In the past, the ability to completely flip a roster in a short period of time, didn’t exist as it does today. And so with that, I wonder if coaches will NOT be afforded the kind of patience tp withstand a 5 year rebuild.
I would have normally dismissed your premise that year two carries the level of importance mentioned in your article but there is some pause there now. While I still don’t agree this year will be a make or break, next year probably is. But my heals aren’t dug in on either account.

I predicted 9 in the article.Come on ... last year he could have had an 8 win season regardless of the roster ... it was 100% on his poor hire of an OC and also the "big name" D coordinators. This season will be better ... the question is HOW MUCH better? Bar should be winning 9 games. Less will be a major disappointment as it means we lost to teams with lesser talent. Better than 9 ... would be somehow Mario / staff took one. Win 10 and recruiting will be off the charts.
Point taken, but I believe the true measures are still in years ahead. On that alone he takes this program to another level.
A lot of those things hang in the balance if Miami craps the bed this year.
A&M game will be crucial for me. I’ll be flying down for it, and I can live with a loss…but it needs to be the right kind of loss. Like we’re in this thing for 3.5 quarters type of deal and we got some bad breaks. Easy bounce-back spots and room to build off that performance with Bethune and Temple after. Win that game, and Miami will be buzzing and should be off to a 5-0 start following the aforementioned two games + a home tilt with GT.Every great coach in the last 2 decades has shown a major improvement on the field in year 2. And that was before the transfer portal.
Anything less than 8-4 this season will be disappointing to me. I can live with 8-4 but I'd really like to see him go 9-3 or better.
Oh I believe he wont be fired or his job at stake. But it will be much much harder to land top 5-7 classes and you might not get NEW NIL partner$hips to join the current ones you now have and might even lose some. Remember NIL is a business as well people are not going to give you money if the product on the field continues to suck. And this year is crucial for realignment purposes. You get stuck in a crappy conference and you get outspent likeWith that contract he has 6 years here no matter what before they’d even consider moving on from him.
I think the team will be better solely because we were horrendous last year. 8 wins likely.
I think we know someones who can make that happen...I'm picturing Mario wrapped around one of the uprights trying to swat the planes away...like King Kong.
Do we prepare to fly banners at halftime during AtM or nah?
I'm thinking we up our game and fly the banners inside HRS.
Hot seat starts Y5 (if necessary).$8mil + per year says he has as much time as he wants to win. I don’t expect him to face much pressure until 2028-2029 based on the resources provided
