All-22 Review of the Miami OL vs FSU Defense

TrumpyCane was watching 49ers last night and their run game concepts are soooo good

They had this little FB motion toss that TrumpyCane wishes we could implement

Been my complaint for 2 years now. We have way too much confidence in 3rd and 4th and short. I've done this same post 5000 times now, it's repetitive and non-beneficial, but when it's 3rd or 4th and 1, we just run into the A-Gap. I mean, literally, every single time. If my fat *** on my iPad can see it when reviewing film, what do you think the millionaires see when it's their job?

I forget the exact numbers because it was giving me ulcers last year, but it was something like 23 straight plays on short yardage where we just ran into the A-Gap. For some reason, Dawson and Mario/Alex think it's 2024 again. In 2024, we did the same thing, but it was literally never stopped. In 2025, teams smartened up. They just slam 11 bodies into the A-Gap when we go heavy, and it's finally able to be stopped.

Just look at the evidence when we actually do different **** in these situations.

1st and Goal from the 3, toss to Mallory, walk in
3rd and Goal from the 3, line up Lofton at fullback in the I, slip him into the flat, easiest touchdown imaginable
Double OT, 2 point play from the 3, run Mali in Jet motion, hand him the ball, the entire defense flies to the LOS, could've thrown it left-handed it was so open
4th and 2 from the 42, we throw it, little disjointed but Mallory is standing all by himself on the sideline for an easy first down, Mensah bounces the ball to him, should've been an easy conversion.

But the one time we do what we always do, which is line up with 3 tight ends and run into the A-Gap, Fletcher gets stonewalled and it's a turnover on downs.

We have put so much of the exact same **** on film that, whenever we do literally anything different, it's wide open.
💯

Someone send this to Mario / Dawson. They always talks about self scouting….they have to see these tendencies and realize that we don’t always have to RB dive into the A gap.

Excellent point. Yes, our success rate in 2024 on 3rd n short, 4th n short was off the charts. Martinez and Fletch were bowing balls. We also had some movers on the o-line. Was a breath of fresh air after years of getting bullied in those short yard situations.

In 2025, we weren’t quite as successful, although Brown and Fletch still did a good job overall. There was definitely a drop off from 2024. Like you say, teams adjusted and slammed 11 guys in the A-gap. Brown and Fletch had to work to get those yards. It wasn’t automatic like 2024.

This year, we are still trying to force it and it’s back to the Al Golden and Manny Diaz days in those situations. We are getting stopped way more often than we are converting. We just don’t have the hosses up front to get it done, especially since defenses have adjusted.

It’s crazy that we all see how much more successful we are in those situations this year when we try something different, as long as we execute. Because it’s wide open. No need to keep being stubborn anymore and trying to slam it up the gut on 3rd n 2, 4th n 2, etc…It’s just not working this year.

I don't get why they don't tag RPO's on 4th down. Miami's OL splits stack the box, then putting 4 TE's on the field (and 1 has been 'good' all year) with no slide RPO? No pop pass? Nothing?! Got in a phone booth and lost

It's very hard to win when you are at a numbers disadvantage. It feels like everyone in the world has gotten the memo except football coaches.

Clearly it didn't work but in the Cinematic Recap you can see Mirabal talking to the OL with the ipad about the stunts and basically telling them if you get them first they can't do it. Meaning wash the edge who is penetrating the B gap and allowing the tackle to go around the C. Get hands on the Edge and it kills the stunt if they can't penetrate. You can easily drive them back into the stunt and take them both out and it doesn't feel good to get rolled up on and they'll stop doing it.

Surely we will work on it this week because we were way too patient getting hands on them. If not, Pitt will eat us alive up front.

For those of you that are film dudes, how many big plays did we miss? I saw a clip where Mensah is looking at Barkate with his hand up (“throw it deep, I’m open”) and Mensah hesitated. It appears in the picture that Mensah had protection.

By no means, is this a knock on Mensah as I think he’s a phenomenal QB. I am just using it as an example of a missed opportunity.
