All-22 Review of the Miami OL vs FSU Defense

Great stuff as usual.

It's crazy how well we we're able to run the ball that game especially to the outside but we just kept finding ways to not stick with it.

What bothers me most is that we supposedly have one of the best OL coaching staffs in the country, yet our biggest problems are fundamental mistakes. At some point, you have to hold the coaches accountable for that. We're six games into the season, and we're just now seeing guys consistently keep their shoulders square. That's basic offensive line technique, not some advanced concept that takes half a season to figure out. The difference between an average offensive line and an elite one is mastering the little details: footwork, leverage, hand placement, angles, and technique. If we're still struggling with the fundamentals this deep into the season, either the coaching isn't translating to the field or the players aren't being developed the way they should be. Either way, that's a coaching problem, and calling someone an elite OL coach means nothing if his players aren't executing the basics.

Mensah clock has to go faster and he needs to start just taking off and getting what he can vs setting us back yardage.

And just look at what Louisville did to them 9.2 yards per carry vs 5.8. Also allowed only one sack. Anyone think the Cards are world beaters?

They have a different scheme and talent than Miami has at RB, but I agree with you in principle.

There’s no reason why Miami shouldn’t have spammed outside zone from the pistol like Louisville did that entire second half.

Miami only ran it a few times.

On that first 4th down conversion that failed, FSU was so confident it was going inside that the DE to the field side came crashing in.

An outside zone run from the pistol against that look with either Mallory or Lyle (who looked great by the way) is a house call.

I don't get why they don't tag RPO's on 4th down. Miami's OL splits stack the box, then putting 4 TE's on the field (and 1 has been 'good' all year) with no slide RPO? No pop pass? Nothing?! Got in a phone booth and lost

I would have loved to see that heavy set play action play we used when Cam was here. Worked like a charm against VTech, Lofton or Mueller would have walked into the end zone because FSU was so confident we were running HB dive right off the guards ***.

Just let Lofton pretend to block the end and slide off him into the flat. If the end crashes the dive throw it, if he sits or runs w the TE give it.

Miami missed multiple TD because the line didn’t hold up in pass protection. Literally if they could have just done their job it would have been a route.

Also Fletcher missed multiple holes by forcing the run to the designed hole instead of using natural feel to take what was there.

FSU didnt even blitz crazy, they did simple ET stunts and our line was getting worked.. Too much pressure from all over

Been my complaint for 2 years now. We have way too much confidence in 3rd and 4th and short. I've done this same post 5000 times now, it's repetitive and non-beneficial, but when it's 3rd or 4th and 1, we just run into the A-Gap. I mean, literally, every single time. If my fat *** on my iPad can see it when reviewing film, what do you think the millionaires see when it's their job?

I forget the exact numbers because it was giving me ulcers last year, but it was something like 23 straight plays on short yardage where we just ran into the A-Gap. For some reason, Dawson and Mario/Alex think it's 2024 again. In 2024, we did the same thing, but it was literally never stopped. In 2025, teams smartened up. They just slam 11 bodies into the A-Gap when we go heavy, and it's finally able to be stopped.

Just look at the evidence when we actually do different **** in these situations.

1st and Goal from the 3, toss to Mallory, walk in
3rd and Goal from the 3, line up Lofton at fullback in the I, slip him into the flat, easiest touchdown imaginable
Double OT, 2 point play from the 3, run Mali in Jet motion, hand him the ball, the entire defense flies to the LOS, could've thrown it left-handed it was so open
4th and 2 from the 42, we throw it, little disjointed but Mallory is standing all by himself on the sideline for an easy first down, Mensah bounces the ball to him, should've been an easy conversion.

But the one time we do what we always do, which is line up with 3 tight ends and run into the A-Gap, Fletcher gets stonewalled and it's a turnover on downs.

We have put so much of the exact same **** on film that, whenever we do literally anything different, it's wide open.

Thansk for posting all 22 @Ironmanfootball Things that stand out to me.

1) we really played like crap C+ game where Mallory and Mali saved us. FSU is who we thought they were. They played and coached an A game. Especially norvell on screen game (not so much inside the 5 yard line 😂).On a day where Uga loses to Auburn AT HOME. I’m happy with the W.

2) ET stunts, fantastic learning opportunity for this OL.

3) diversity in the run game really helped. Everyone we play sells out on IZ & duo. That’s becoming a feature and not a bug. Gotta run that play to set up other stuff. Great posts above about how that turned out.

4) all 22 shows you lack of execution on OL but our Guys were WIDE *** open. I think the pressure and hurries got to Mensah a bit and messed his clock up. No qb likes to get knocked around and off their spot.

5) you do not want to be peaking in mid October. Tons of meat on the bone and opportunities to improve. This staff has shown the ability to improve over the course of a season. That gives me hope where there is no clear cut tier 1 team in 2026!

what was our issue with the stunts FSU was running? we seemed to have a big problem with our technique on those plays which caused FSU to have more success. I hope Mirabel can fix these things going forward.
