I took a look at ~20 plays. Missed tackles, confusion, bad eyes, loafs, bad angles... you name it, it's happening
This might go down as the worst passing defense in the history of Miami football. How is that possible. Is the talent that subpar(I think it’s part of the problem) are they not smart enough to play zone, do they not practice, is it injuries? This is wild to watch play out so far this year.
It's crazy "high school open" space +You’ve been harping on the tackling for a while now and showing videos of other programs be what we preach and teach. Think it’s time you’re fully recognized for being on it.
Aside from that, this is what I have a problem with, too:

That is a lot of space and comfort. 7 on 7 folks have tighter windows and more stress.

It's the same CB room as last season. The only DBs we lost were Scott and Thomas. Although both those guys are studs, the fact that we have this much of a drop-off is a head-scratcher. On paper, it should be one of the best in the countryThis might go down as the worst passing defense in the history of Miami football. How is that possible. LB have no accountability to cover anything ever, WR could be right next to them and they will stare at QB and cover grass, never look for work, so we run super bail country cover 3 with no underneath guys.. I think the FSU explosive made us harp even harder to bail even farther, even in redzone so underneath is always open, RB screens are 20+ explosivesThis might go down as the worst passing defense in the history of Miami football. The entire DL are 5-stars, no? There's plenty of enough talent there. Just have to adjust to use them properly. Some of this cannot be fixed in-season (angles, tackling technique, OODA Loop/eyes)but it's littered with blue chips.
Our backers are what they are (run stuffing JAG+ types that lack the fluidity to cover well in space), but in the secondary we’ve got Fitz, Poyser, Lucas, EOC, Dunnigan….dont even need to bring up the talent on DL.
There may be more talented defenses out there but it’s not many of them. If you want to sell injuries I can buy it to a degree, but “talent” has to be near the bottom.
Eyes and feel IMO can get better as the season progresses and game slows down, still it's pretty bad right now.The entire DL are 5-stars, no? There's plenty of enough talent there. Went to a 3-man rush on 3rd down in the redzon I think. Any competent QB can sit back there and find someone with time. Safeties in the endzone. They throw underneath for an easy score. You’ve been harping on the tackling for a while now and showing videos of other programs be what we preach and teach. Harder games ahead re ND, Duke, VT, Charlotte and CFB PO... Miami's played one real team (WF) so faras the season progresses and game slows down
Nah but my dad wasSide note...you military? Referencing OODA Loop been a while since I have heard that term.
the big slow but don't jam thing is WILD. I got why he wanted to run some tampa 2 w those jits but eeeeshBig corners who struggle to cover but don't press and can't tackle; big slow linebackers lost in coverage; horrible angles by safeties... And a DC running the exact same scheme all season.
Is any of this fixable?
Eh... I would buy into this more if the secondary was getting exposed by great offenses, but they are getting exposed by teams who put up average yards against average teams. Do we really think that Syracuse, Duke, VT, UVA, Louisville and Pitt all have a bunch of NFL players in the secondary? Or that all of those teams have more talent on defense than us?Out of the secondary guys that you named how many of them do you think will play in the NFL? That’s how I base my discussion for talent. Right now JJ is the only one that I see that has NFL traits.
I’m not even sure if some of those guys would even get drafted. Maybe very very late NFL but I don’t see any of them actually playing in the NFL currently. Fitz is unique as he clearly is a ball hawk, but I don’t know where he would fit on an NFL roster with his lack of physicality.
None of the cornerbacks impressed me. They might be able to make a practice squad.
I would like to see us blitz the slow LBs instead of DBs from 30 yards away. Mo was great as a blitzer last year but we havent seen it this year. Is Heatherman saving it? I don't get the free releases and leaving the middle of the field open the way we do. CBs are constantly bailing also and completely taking themselves out of the play. DBs never in position to make plays on the ball. Crazy we are doing all this to avoid big plays in the passing game but still giving up big plays in the passing game. Obviously what we are doing isnt working. Gotta mix things ups.Ok I feel compelled to jump in here. Quick preface - this isn't some sort of defense of Hetherman, the players, their effort, etc. However, when I read about blue chips all over the place and we only lost Thomas and Scott, it's completely disingenuous. It is indeed true that we have blue chippers all over the place. It's also true that we "only" lost Scott and Thomas. That said, a far more truthful statement would be that in addition to losing Scott and Thomas to the NFL, we also lost CB1 and CB 3 for the entire season (thus far) and CB2 for 6 games and while we do have blue chippers all over the defense, most of those blue chips in the secondary are freshmen and/or lack meaningful experience. Thornton has stunk in pass defense. Damari Brown has shown little to nothing during his time here to warrant his blue chip status out of high school.
Feel free to rip the staff, the players, etc. That defensive performance Saturday was pretty pathetic. Please keep it real.
My honest opinion (that no one asked for) is that this is 70% personnel and 30% scheme/coach/tackling. The personnel is what it is at this point. The scheme/philosophy is clearly to stop the run no matter what, try to limit explosives via passing game and deal with the short/intermediate stuff hoping the opponents won't execute at the same rate our offense does. I'm good with the emphasis on stopping the run. I'm good with limiting explosives. I'm not good with just accepting that teams can put their RBs and TEs against our LBs and pass at will. Our LBs are in their 6th and 8th seasons of CFB. They can't cover. Chase falls for eye candy WAY too much. I have to believe that the backups aren't any better. I think Hetherman could mix up his blitzes more. Other than that, I think we are kinda stuck. Feel free to rip this take, but I think it's pretty fair and honest.
