This is another coach who piques my interest due to his Mizzou background.

He is currently the first year DC at Wazzu and I think he has done a good job.

He is also Gary Pinkel's nephew.

Other tidbits......

1) Graduate of Mount Union, which has sent a ton of former players and coaches to many college
and NFL teams.
2) Worked at New Hampshire, impressed Chip Kelly who was the UNH OC at the time (see link).
3) Worked for some good coaches at Mizzou, and he may even be able to bring Mizzou's outgoing DLine
coach Kuligowski.

I have a thing for Mizzou coaches, especially on the defensive side of ball.
They develop alot of great players and strong defenses and you have to assume Richt is impressed as well.

Thoughts?

They had a total D in the 90s and a scoring D tied with Miami at 83. One year as DC. Not seeing how this would be an appropriate hire at all for Miami. Am I missing something?

Well, if you look at where we were last year, and where we are this year....that is all Grinch. I would hazard a guess we will make another leap forward next year as long as Grinch stays. Players love him, high energy guy who is focused on technique. Our DB's last year had no clue how to look for a ball and maintain coverage. I think within a year he will be a sought after coach.

Great and then he can move on to a lower tier program. He has no business being the DC at th University of Miami, whatsoever.

So, you mean people would have to look beyond his current stats to see his impact and ability??

Interesting concept ...

Not sure if some of the "resident genius posters" on this board will be able to do that.

Not a lot of vision to project ... Mostly looking to hire guys from a rear view perspective ...

Did Tom Herman have any business being the OC for Urban Meyer?

Or a coach from a lower-level Div1AA program taking over a Pac12 program?

Yeah, I definitely noticed the improved play of your defense.
I also love your Dline coach.

Urban Meyer is an offensive coach. Herman came in the same way that Dorsey would come in under Richt for example.

This guy with his 83rd ranked defense and zero experience would be running the show on his own. There are probably 30 more qualified DCs out there.

No question their defense was improved, beyond what the stats suggest. Against Stanford they looked legitimately tough for most of the game. I think the Cardinal took them a bit lightly.

Still, I wouldn't get carried away. This is where the adjustments tend to fail. The Cougar fans naturally expect the improvement to continue, if not exponentially. But you're still dealing with a head coach who refuses to run the football...last in the nation in rushing attempts per game. That's going to soften your team in general. Plus the Pac 12 has a full offseason to not only take Washington State defense more seriously but to study the tendencies.

Let's face it, many things worked in their favor this year. The defense essentially blew the game against UCLA but did it so early it allowed Falk enough time to counter. The UCLA freshman quarterback waltzed roughly 45 yards for a touchdown but it left a minute remaining. The Rutgers game was similarly fortunate, with several key late penalties against Rutgers including touchdowns called back. Washington State played Oregon at exactly the right time. I wouldn't take those defensive stats seriously. The starting quarterback Vernon Adams was out and the backup was inept. It still required a desperate 10 point comeback in the final 4 minutes including a touchdown with 1 second remaining, before winning in double overtime.

So the people who defend Mike Leach always fall back on "if he just had a decent defensive coordinator".........

And now we want to hire his actual defensive coordinator. CAN'T MAKE THIS UP.

Who are these people that you speak of?
My OP had nothing to do with Leach.

Watch some of their games. That defense, as the year progressed, played very tough and sound against a lot of high powered offenses. They looked night and day different from last year with a group of inferior athletes. They were bringing lumber and playing very sound football the 4 or 5 times I watched them. The talent level is garbage.

Exactly.
Stats are important, but folks also need to watch the games for context.

I don't advocate hiring Grinch over a few other guys I like a lot better. But Urb is no offensive genius. His offenses have succeeded when he's had top OCs like Mullen and Herman. They've struggled when he hasn't even with great talent.

I'm not even sure Urb ever coordinated an offense before getting the BGSU HC gig. Urb is a genius leader and button pusher. He's no offensive guru.

Tim Tebow won the heisman and Chris Rainey looked like a hall of fame player. I would say he is a guru...Regardless, **** that trick

Yeah. He wasn't the OC and that wasn't his offense. Mullen installed and ran that offense. How'd he look at UF after Mullen left? How'd his genius offense look at OTU this year without Herman? They have NFL talent oozing out of that offense, and it looked like **** all year.

Saying that Grinch's defense is good bc it "looks better" is ridiculous.

This guy may very well turn out to be the next Pat Narduzzi. Or he could be the next Dorito.

You don't hire a guy after one year total experience who has the 83rd ranked D in the country, under any circumstances, when your program has been in the ******* for 10 years and is coming off the worst 4 years of defense any of us have ever seen.

He's still green but shows a lot of promise. Yes, he did a masterful job of improving our d over last year but is he ready for the jump some of you are expressing? No, I really don't believe so. He needs a couple more years of experience and improvement.
