Al Golden - What Went Wrong?

You’re trippin. Wow. Wow.

Golden sucked. That was HIS scheme Dorito ran, btw. Golden was a former DC.

Golden sucked in so many ways. The idea he would have succeeded bigly but but but is absurd. He is today a position corch on a bad nfl team. His DC who so obviously stunk also got fired again. Because he sucked.

Again, had he been ruthless enough to ditch D'Onofrio(and his own preconceived notions) and bring in a DC that brought a different perspective, maybe he would have survived. Lots of guys eventually turn to people that have differing opinions on how things should be done, and end up finding success. Look at Dabo Swinney. Awful offensive mind(He was a true I Form guy, because that's all he knew as a coach), but then lucked out and hired Chad Morris. Chad opened his eyes to what one can do with speed and tempo, and Clemson was able to start winning. That's what I'm referring to with Golden. How much of the scheme was D'Onofrio(Who showed the same philosophy without Golden), and how much was Golden, we don't truly know. I will say this, I find it odd that the one stretch where the defense started looking anywhere near decent was when rumors were flying around Golden getting more involved on that side of the ball. That said, regardless of who was running the unit, it was **** poor, and people saw that D'Onofrio wasn't carrying his weight whatsoever.

Maybe a female yoga instructor would have won natties at UM, if only they’d been given the job and knew enough to fire Dorito.

There is no reason in the world to think Golden had any hidden potential to be some great leading natty level coach. None. Comparing him to Dabo is an insult to Dabo, who has a tually won 2 titles, amd actually proven himself good. Blaming Dorito for Golden’s failures seems wrong to the core as well. They both sucked at what they did. Golden was not a good head coach, and there isnt any reason to imagine otherwise.

Do you realize how bad Dabo was in year 3 at Clemson? Do you? I know that you think that coaching tenures are this binary thing where the guy is either great or is an incompetent buffoon, but that isn't how it works in most cases. Some great coaches were a hire away from being fired, and some guys with potential ultimately played themselves by being loyal to crap. Golden fell in the latter group. Golden ultimately failed, but it wasn't the unmitigated disaster that Shannon and Coker were. Those two were truly incapable of running a program, and it showed.

You are really awful at logic.

Lots of people have coached in cfb over the years. Most weren’t good. Very, very few won one, let alone two natties.

So we are discussing a KNOW FAILURE in Al Golden. And your bright idea is that because one guy who turned out to be great didn’t look amazing in year 3 of his career tht that is a reason to think Al Golden might have been great if only he’d fired Dorito?

Your argument is truly insane. Hope you’re trolling.

I don’t know how anybody can white knight for any of of the last 4 or 5 staphs.

Golden did a lot of things right. He pushed for the facility upgrades that Shannon and Co. had disregarded(Golden understood and saw that Miami was woefully behind in the arms race and teamed with Eichorst/Hocutt to start that process). He built upon the Shannon era academic successes and kept Miami in the race for some at risk kids. Golden was also the first coach in over a decade to start rebuilding relationships with local schools. Miami started to turn the corner in regards to advertising and the like with Golden, he understood and encouraged new thinking around the program in regards to marketing.

That said, Golden failed because he was loyal to garbage. When you look at Golden's first staff, you saw some guys with legit ability. Fisch was a legit OC, McDonald was a solid WR coach. Once those guys moved on, it became obvious that Golden didn't really have a plan. Coley was a disaster as an OC, and D'Onofrio was by far the worst DC this school has ever seen. Don't get me started on Jethro Franklin. Had Golden been ruthless and willing to hold his staff to the same standard that he held his players, he would still be here, and probably winning championships. Remember, Miami won 8 games the year he was fired, and 19 the next two years combined. Look at how many of those Golden era recruits ended up working out. The dude wasn't some talentless scrub, he had a solid eye for talent. That said, no one could have predicted that Golden would have been willing to put his career on the line for guys that weren't performing. Al was the first time since Jimmy that Miami made an inspired hire of an up and coming coach. Unfortunately, the guy sunk himself by not being tough enough to fire people once they showed that they couldn't do the job. That's the trait that separates the truly good coaches from the pretenders.

Golden didn't do anything right that's why he isn't here. Dude is all around trash. EASILY THE WORSE COACH IN HUIRRICANE HISTORY.
