Thats been one thing I've liked about Al since he's got here. He has real roster foresight at every position, every year he evaluates the current at future needs at every position. It blew my mind with the last staff how ill-prepared they were for players leaving or getting hurt. Stuff like the imbalanced classes really hurt us, and we didn't seem to have guys comming in for the Fall Camp like we've been having lately.

Between his after signing day scores, to guys like Garret Lassiter and other preferred walk-ons who seem like real players (don't underestimate what having a walk-on with some real ability on your *** for PT does to young guys on scholarship) , to finding guys like Patrick O'Donnel, Mike Williams, Justin Renfrow and David Gilbert at the last minute who give us some quality depth with our extra schollies, this dude has been on top of everything. There isn't a single position on the roster that hasn't been accounted for in the best way possible, not including kids we offered and did not get of course, because theres nothing you can do about that we tried.

I really like the 5th year Senior loophole. I think its a great way to get somebody who can help you out in the short term without taking up schollies and pt long term. Renfrow and Gilbert go a long way towards us having a completely revamped D-Line. I could see us trying to find a FB this way next year. and I didn't even mention O'Donnel

Do you think we will keep finding guys like this? Or once Al gets more of his guys in, will there be less holes in the depth chart?

We love the 5th year rule. No question it's good for the kids. How are we gonna feel about it when one of our expected starters/contributers bolts....?
 
Russell Wilson effect. Smart and ambitious coaches will be doing this where needed, and with a scattershot roster like he inherited due to Shannonagins, it's no surprise.
 
Agreed... What we're seeing with Al is proper roster management. Most of the guys Al has bought in are in the 2 deep already. No matter how you slice it, we win either way because every position now has competition...

I agree with you about the old staff. To me, it seemed like the old staff put all their eggs into the same basket only to watch the enemy steal them, cook them, and eat them.

I think you may be a little confused with the motivation of the particular players leaving their old teams. If a player completes their degree in a 4 years then they can transfer without waiting to another school. So if someone has rode the bench or was just a spot duty player for years then their loss won't be a major factor. Renfrow was a role player at UVA so they won't miss him. An as for Gilbert he retired do injury at Wisconsin then decided to leave for his finally year since all his coaches were leaving also. So I don't really see players leaving early after 4 yrs being an issue and besides it would actually open an additional spot for that years recruiting class to add an additional player.

Gonna need a couple more next season, particularly at DT or a couple of quality JUCO kids at that position
 
I think he will keep doing this until we can truly recruit without sanctions looming over our head. I like what he's doing he's getting older players and making everybody compete
 
Hard to imaging a 5th year graduate student not wanting to come to Coral Gables and hang with Al for a semester or two. UM is the perfect setting for graduate players with an extra year of eligibility.

Gives the U the opportunity to bring guys back who may have been initially missed during recruiting and developed in college, of which the state of Fla seems to mass produce....

I don't know, I guess it depends on what you're expecting with the 5th year transfers... I think the punter was a good idea because he was a beast at Cincy, but players like Renfrow and Williams were unproductive (Even the USC TE transfer) at their respective institutions and Gilbert was somewhat damaged goods... We won't really know how it will workout until the conclusion of the season... I'm just a bit suspicious about a unproductive or or injury-prone guy transferring over when they were non-existent against similar competition... Too be fair Williams wasn't that good and the tight end from USC, Blakely was injured...
 
Read Jacob Coker might graduate this year. If he does, would be curious if he would be interested in reuniting with Coley.

There's no doubt that kid is transferring....but I thought he was only a sophomore?

Coker is a Junior academically. He redshirted in 2011. Depending on how many summer classes and AP classes he took, its difficult but not impossible to graduate in 3 years.

Kids can bolt any time they want. In most cases they would have to sit out a year if they did, but if they really want to change schools, they can.

interesting. I think I'd rather have him than Ryan Williams starting next year if Olsen isn't ready
