So Dusty’s best work in the 80s wasn’t against the horsemen?
Nope! Not even close.
By the time he started chopping it up with the 4 horsemen, he had already established himself as the biggest draw in all of wrestling. Back then that included the NWA, WWWF & the AWA. Dusty was the biggest draw in wrestling long before his Championship Wrestling from Georgia run where he battled the 4 Horsemen
Prior to that, his countless matches vs Harley Race for the NWA title , his feuds with the likes of the Assassins, Abdullah The Buthcher, Kevin Sullivan and his legendary Texas Bull Rope Matches were the best thing going in Wrestling long before the Horsemen bit came along.
All of this was taking place when Ric Flair was only the North American Heavyweight Champ. Long before Ric Flar became the NWA champ. Flair modeled his work on the mic after Dusty Rhodes.
Where do you think the Rock learned how to work a mic? Growing up in Championship Wrestling from Florida locker rooms and watching Dusty Rhodes rule the day. Back then nobody was better than Dusty Rhodes on the microphone!
Dusty’s battles vs the 4 Horsemen were towards the end of an illustrious , extremely busy and mostly injury free career. Big Dust was the first big man in the ring that moved like a well conditioned athlete. He ate 60 minutes matches for breakfast!
