Life was intense, back in the day, when we competed for national championships.
Every play, every first down, every game had so much meaning. My ladyfolk saw my personality change as game day approached and, when we lost, I wouldn’t be much fun to be around.
So there is advantage in Canes mediocrity: If UM wins, great. If it loses, it’d be a shame but what difference does it make, say, if you go 8-5 or 7-6?
It’s like when we, as kids, used to play those endless pickup games and we didn’t even keep score. We just enjoyed the game for the little love of it. Results didn’t matter.
Yeah, I’ve lowered my sights. I’m having serious trouble understanding our leadership.
But I’ve got to learn how to cope in this downward cycle, which will last for a few more years. Lowering expectations — and just enjoying the games for themselves— seems to be the only way to enjoy this era of Canes football.
Don’t think I don’t care about winning. I do. And I’ll be out there tomorrow freezing my buns off,
cheering myself hoarse rooting for the Canes in the cathedral of my youth, Yankee Stadium.
But whatever the outcome, life will go on.

Don’t tell me what to do

Nah, the OP isn't trying to tell anyone what to do. He's just letting us know that as much as he loves the Canes, he has resigned himself to the fact that the situation is what it is. There's no good reason to get upset, but there's always good reasons to continue being a die hard fan. If I could take you back to the canes of the 70s, you would understand exactly how he feels.

His mistake was in the title of his post. Nothing more.

Sadly I go into most every game figuring Morks idoiocy will be ourdownfall and another defeat Is on the horizon so the expectation is not so high.

Then when our talent overcomes his stupidity and we pull out a win from the jaws of defeat it makes for a great day.

As the OP lived on the edge every game so did I back them.Wy wife went out and bought nerf stuff to throw at the TV for fear id be Buying a new one on a regular basis and back then they weren’t so cheap.Losses back then meant the loss of playing for the MNC.They were hard to take and took days to get over. They hurt.Hurt bad.

Losses nowadays just mean the difference between 8-5 or 9-4.They aren’t as hard to take because they come so more frequently and like anything else in life that happens on a regular basis the more it happens the more tolerable it becomes.

I hope at some point before my old *** heads on to the great beyond I’ll be able to feel what I felt so many weekends back then. The feeling when a win was just about guaranteed and a loss took days to get over.

Doubt I ever have that feeling again especially with the AD and HC we now have in charge destroying this once magnificent program. But you never know miracles do happen and GOD knows we at the U do deserve one.

I may never see another UM championship. But how many college football fans can say they saw their team, in their lifetime, win five championships and compete for another three to five? Not many.

Looking more forward to Saturday than tomorrow. Not worried about either. Liberating.. yet sad.

I don't know which championship it was...but after enough of them, you can't really go back, as a fanbase...as a program...to just enjoying the game like we're ******* CAL or DUKE or some other meaningless P5 program. Sorry, brother. The 80s, 90s, and 2000s happened. Can't go back.

Outside of three or four programs, there has never been more parity in college football and most Saturdays there isn't much difference between the #10th ranked and 30th ranked team.

RIght now there are 14 teams ranked in the Top 25 with 3-4 losses.

And imo even among the elite teams most of the time QB play separates the good to the great.

Just go back and look at all the NC teams of the 15-20 years. Outside of Tuscaloosa, the ONLY teams to break through to win it all were led by a dominant quarterback who could put the team on his shoulders.

I know Richt makes it even harder with his offense, but we have got to get the QB situation fixed here if we are ever going to elevate past where we are right now. Just look at Oklahoma, who is in the playoff with the 108th ranked defense in the country.

Until then, I still enjoy every Canes game as much as I can and have gone to just about every home game for the last 25-30 years.

That's the **** thing, I can't even enjoy most of the games bc the execution on offense is horrendous! Run up the middle on 1st & 2nd down, then all verts on 3rd, then punt on 4th...wash, rinse, repeat. There is no enjoyment in that at all. I could dig your point if we were playing decent football in all phases and just getting out talented bc we are building the roster...but that is not the case. We are getting Corched!!!

I have been tuning in to see the young guys play and see if anyone of them balls out, and provides hope for the future. I have waited to see J Wills at QB for pretty much the last 2/3rds of the season.

I said it last season in that for a 10 win season, that was the most painful season to watch and go through as a Canes fan when the team reached 10 wins.

I’m less concerned about the 7-5 record. But the collapse of recruiting is extremely worrisome. You can’t win championships with 40th-ranked classes. Combine that with the lazy promotion of the co-DCs and the unwillingness to hire an OC and a new QB coach...the next few years look grim...
