Adjustments to the 4-0-4 defense we're seeing?

Clemson is now the 4th team in a row to run the 4i tite defensive alignment against us in order to take away IZ.

Somehow Manny keeps being surprised by this.

It's to the point now where we need to be expecting it.

I think we need to be more creative in getting runs to the perimeter. More OZ, more sweeps/tosses, using orbit motion beyond just a decoy, more misdirection. Anything to loosen up the LBs coming downhill with abandon.

Manny being surprised every week and Lashlee not adjusting asap last nite is not a good look mane.. This is stuff we should have counters to ASAP because its such a automatic for defenses nowadays.. We play some defensive minded head coaches these next couple weeks again too..

I have mentioned this before but we have relied on inside zone because everything else we've tried early on has been awful. Power/Counter, Counter Trey, Dart, QB Sweep.

The fact is we are improved upfront this year but we are just covering up defenders and not moving them.

Every respectable OC I know says that the Odd Tite front (4i-0-4i) is an absolute *****. Makes it extremely hard to run Inside Zone, Zone Read and RPO's.

The best OC I know personally know says that you won't get Inside Zone, just forget it. You have to add a TE to create another gap or attempt to hit the edges.

I'm no OC but I think being able to throw the ball on early downs probably helps.
We definitely need to show more diversity in our running game though. We've shown like 3 running plays the entire year. Maybe our Offensive Line isn't good enough yet? I don't know.

I'd like to see some Speed Option to get King and our RB's on the edge.

Manny mentioned this in his interview with Joe Rose.

Said they used a 3-man front and run-blitzed with the outside backers.

Said we needed to make plays on the outside, and their CBs had shown some vulnerability.

I understand the strategy, but UVA had a 6’7” WR with good ball skills.

That play calling looked like Enos last year. Run, run, pass and repeat. Maybe even more so Richt, but either way, it was not good nor very creative, other than a few plays.

We have to stop going vertical with guys who have proven they are not a threat. We have been wasting downs all year. I have a feeling we see the youngins next week. Need someone to provide a spark on the outside and get these defenses to loosen up.

Misdirection, bubble screens, TE over the middle, and RB passes are what you use to defeat it.
You also move the pocket to defeat the up the middle blitzes. If we had remotely serviceable wr's you could pick up big yards on slants and go routes.
I was shocked Lashlee/King didn’t move the pocket

How about the the shovel play Clemson ran late in the game, and that Pitt bludgeoned Clemson to death with when they upset them back in 2016 I believe? At least show me something different, bc what I saw from Lashlee on Saturday was Enos-esque in terms of stubbornness.

The first play of the game was filthy. They lined up to get a predictable run on 1st down. Then moved out of it and blitzed the gun back. King had no shot there.

That Alignment was designed to take away where spread offenses want to live, which is the B gap, B gap is holy grail of spread offense. It takes that away, also make it hard to pull lineman because you have the lineman sitting right there and tough block for tackle. The 4i/3 techniques don’t allow the guards to pull on gap runs or climb on zone runs. This frees up the ILBs and makes them essentially “free” players

They want to stuff that then when running back obviously bounce it your overhang player who is playing down hill fills it quick, plus he can help out in passing game. The best OC in game have been frustrated by it ISU has given Oklahoma **** running it and Venables went to learn it from them and this has been talked about for a couple seasons now so we should of known he would take away..

If you get a chance check the way we attack it and what we could have done on same alignment as Clemson

50:10 mark shows exact same alignment and how we could of attacked ( @CanesAreAble thread reminded me I saw this earlier)

1:37 mark first offensive play, check clemson alignment

That's a really underwhelming explanation.

I'm interested in your thoughts on why we didn't get our RBs in the pass game early. In anticipation of exactly what they ended up doing to us. Also interested in why we avoided going back to the crossing route after King missed it (he was bumped into by Campbell getting pushed back) to Payton.
