Seems this staff has really emphasized getting better on special teams through the portal. Between the winter and spring portal windows this staff have added 5 specialist. It would be great to see Miami good in all phases again.

Additions:

K Bert Auburn 2024 preseason All American

K Carter Davis kickoff specialist (he will help avoid kickoffs being returned to the house. He had 45 touchbacks on 61 attempts in 2024.)

LS Adam Booker

KR/PR Keelan Marion 2024 All America

PR Keionte Scott 2023 2nd Team All SEC

The bolded is doing a Herculean amount of heavy lifting there.

Bert Auburn is simply not a good P4 kicker.

It's amazing how amazingly ignorant a lot of our fans are about college football and about things in general. Is B. Auburn one of the Borregales brothers? No, he isn't. That said, he has been a solid P4 kicker for YEARS. He was 80%+ on Field goals twice in the last three years with heavy usage all three years. He had a significant regression last year, his biggest issue was connecting from distance, where he was 6/14 from distances beyond 40 yards. Considering how wide the variation is between collegiate kickers, that's not awful.

Bert Auburn is a solid collegiate kicker that likely stands to benefit from a change in scenery. Worst case scenario, Miami has an above average, experienced kicker. He isn't elite, but considering the awful kickers that populate P4, Miami has an experienced, solid kicker. There was always going to be some regression from last year in this area, because elite kickers are rare.

That's a lot of words for the ultimate conclusion that Auburn is "above average" and "solid," and yet my conclusion was he's "not good". And several of those words were extremes like "awful" and "elite," in an apparent attempt to set up a strawman. Illogical, defensive, and also pretty ignorant.

Do you understand the state of collegiate kicking specialists? It's obvious you don't. Auburn is good, because average is what most of us would call bad, because of the fact that there aren't nearly enough decent specialists to go around. That's my point. Is he elite? **** no, but considering that there are likely 10-12 guys in the entire country I would call elite, he's among the better kickers once you drop outside of the elite ranks.

Rank him among all P4 kickers.

I have no doubt, Auburn is better than Davis. He was making FG's in the 80's% in 22 and 23. He kicked FG's at 64% last season. 16 -25, is that good? They were scared to run him out their last season. That's why he's in the portal. I am not going to feel confident with him coming off last season. I pray he returns back to the 80's for us.

Keionte Scott is another addition that can be a big help to special teams. Lead the SEC and 8th nationally in punt return yards in 2023.

I know he only had 88 yards and muffed punt in 2024. That doesn’t take away from his ability to be an impact guy as a returner.

Miami now has a true threats to take kicks and punts to the house or give the offense short fields to work with.

Maybe one day Mario will prioritize this department. Hopefully, not at the expense of losing games.

Why don’t we have a kicking coach? Seems like that might be a wise investment this season.

None of the additions will make a difference if the structure and design by coaches isn’t addressed (return game)
