Now that I've slept on the loss and my bewilderment around the abortion of anything resembling competent football has mostly calmed down, I'm just here to air out my thoughts. Respond or don't, I don't really care.
Coming into the season, I chose to take a hopeful and logical approach to Rosier being the starter - in spite of his 5th year senior status, last year was his first year as a starter. With a year under his belt, 9 months of conditioning and working on his game, I thought that he surely would've improved. I openly stated that on this forum. He's a young guy and he has a lot to learn. An off-season can yield some real improvement, right?
Man...how wrong I was. YES, our offensive line was bad. YES, Rosier didn't often have a clean pocket. But when he DID have a clean pocket, his passes were either uncatchably high, or so overthrown/off target that there was nothing the receiver could do. Last night, he was as bad or worse than the final 3 games last season. He picked up right where he left off.
Our team has a lot of issues, but I can't for a second imagine that even with an underperforming offensive line, Perry or Weldon couldn't have done better. I really CANNOT believe anymore that Rosier is outperforming them that significantly. It's making me think that our coaching staff is just that inept when it comes to talent evaluation.
How often has a backup come into a game and absolutely balled out? A quick Google search and the list is endless. Some of the best QB finds in college football have come in some very unlikely moments. Guys who hadn't won the job in fall camp for whatever reason suddenly get a chance and make everyone wonder what the coaching staff missed. I feel like we're there. I no longer believe that Rosier is the right guy to run the offense.
I'd rather watch someone like Perry make some boneheaded freshman mistakes, but ultimately prove himself than watch Rosier make a couple clutch throws but ultimately continue to be inconsistent and incompetent.
I just can't take this crap anymore. We've suffered too long through too many horrible coaching staffs to finally have one that should know better and still can't seem to even give one of their 4* recruits a chance to make something happen when the game is seemingly lost.
We need a lot of improvement across the board, but it starts with the field general. There is no way the players trust Rosier at this point. This loss felt worse than the Clemson drubbing in 2015. At least we saw that one coming. The worst part is, LSU didn't even look that great. They just looked less worse than us.
There are no excuses anymore. I sincerely hope, at the very least, to see someone new under center this week against Savannah State.
Go Canes.
