Agree with you on preseason rankings.

20 teams is not that arbitrary. The AP poll ranked the top-20 for years. Actually more years than they've ranked a top-25.
I'll slip and still say top-20 every once in a while myself.

If you want to go top 10, there's a precedent for that too...
for about 7-8 years in the 60's.

Interesting. Just looked it up since that was before I was born over 30 years ago.

While there is a precedent for it, I still think it’s a pretty arbitrary measurement since top 25 is used these days.

People still use arbitrary cutoffs to make a point all the time, I saw on Reddit r/cfb someone talking about how the Big 12 had more top 50 teams than the ACC.

And while it is interesting I won’t put any stock in it for now anyways since these are just preseason rankings lol
