Academics: Harvard of the south? Or just South Florida...

Not for the Stanford of the East or the Harvard of the South. Clearly Foote and Donna have been abject failures at everything they have tried to do EXCEPT destroy the football program. The only reason our status went up was the admissions and money driven by the success of the football team and these two mental giants with the wonders of the world BOT, managed to destroy that. Instead of embracing all the positive things resulting from the football team, they choose to repeatedly throw it under the bus. Our rating will continue to decline.

tied at 48 nothing special , Miami will never be known as a school of academics that was some kind of dream of Shalala and she failed like she did as school president. What she known for is being a politician thief who should of been fired on the spot for taking money and letting the rat hang around

so they should quit trying to improve academics bc they'll never be known as a great academic institution? i agree that we should def put a ton more into the football program than we have under any president at Miami and hopefully the next pres does that if the BOT sees it as an important issue. Idk why people continue to hate on the academic quality of the school especially if you didnt attend the school. thought we were all canes but every day its a thread *****ing about something that UM did.

Man, stereotype much? First off, I'm not a UMiami admin, but retired US Military who NEVER attended Miami 'nor work there; I have been a fan of the football team longer than many of you have been alive (Born in '80 on up?, I have an acne scar older than you!)

Lets break it down nice and easy, kiddies

The #38 ranking was not "several" years ago, it was the 2012 ranking published in the fall of 2011 or right before the Shapiro **** storm hit; it has gone down every year since. Hey, if you were in admissions department, an undergrad professor, a student on campus since 2011 or an alumni, you might rightly be ****ED when you perceive the Athletics Department ******** the school's ranking you worked so hard to move up. Memo for you Call of Duty poindexters: Generals and Admirals don't win wars by themselves and Shalala didn't make the rankings go up by herself and certainly not down by herself (though she had a hand in both). Who do you think was kicking Hadji's *** while Petraeus was horizontal and superimposed on his biographer, huh?

A recent study published by Research in Higher Ed estimated it would take a school like UM spending around $112 MILLION, ANNUALLY to move up to the 20s. Heck, the same study also infers that once a school gets into the Top 40, you have a good chance of staying...Unless you have poor oversight and Nevin Shapiro. I can see why the "grunts" at Miami are torqued.

Yes, the Tuition AND FEES at UM are about $44K. Note, that includes a sizeable fee for ATHLETICS. I dare say only a small minority of students mind paying it (or their student loan/aid or their parents or their academic scholarship paying it); The ESPN camera's show the student section for a reason: It is usually full unlike the other sections. Why so much? Hey, if you have to compete with government and $900 BILLION in stimulus spending courtesy of China, you might have to raise your rates too.

The state of Florida has tried its very best to bankrupt private college education in Florida. Yep, that immigrant gardner buying lottery tickets in Hialeah every week funds the Bright Futures scholorship for Buffy to go to a state college or university and Daddy and Mommy to buy that BMW. Until it was changed a few years ago, Bright Futures would have gave an ACADEMIC scholarship to 890 SAT Tim Tebow.

Over 50% of Miami’s students are out of state because of the state’s actions. You have to compete for a new breed of student these days, one less inclined to drive and more inclined to want the amenities of home. Why do you think they built a new student center and are planning new dorms? It is compete or die. Ever been to the University of Disney/Universal, I mean University of Central Florida? Cheap land and experience at building theme parks are a plus…Some of the students go there just to be close to Harry Potter land. This is in many ways a sheltered generation, even more so than Gen X (of which I am a part). Not only does Miami, like the military, have to find teenagers willing to be adventurous and move away out of state, they also have to find smart ones.

Shalala is gone in about four months. As Ted Hendricks’s offspring related, she has expended all of her rounds. Let's hope for a President whose great academic reputation is equaled by being able to find and SUPPORT a wise and powerful AD who will fire Fattaweenie Alfredo, Second Mile Dorito and the FUBAR members of the coaching staff . No more checks in bowling alleys, but a focus on Academics, Fiscally Prudent Medical Administration and enough comfort in their man/woman hood to allow a PROPERLY RESOURCED AD to hire the right coach for the job no matter what happened in the past with the coach.

Did you mean TJ MaxX? Some smart people shop there to save money. Where do you shop? Chess King?

Schools that are within a few spots of Miami: Clemson, aTm, OSU, Texas, Syracuse, UConn, UGA, Pitt, Maryland

Schools that are tied with Miami: UF, PSU, Washington

Schools that are better than Miami: Wisky, GT, BC, UVA, UCLA, USC, Wake, Michigan, UNC, Notre Dame, Vandy, Rice, Cal, Northwestern, Stanford, Duke.

I count fourteen schools out of that lot who have played in a BCS game since we last did.
I count 5 teams who have played for a national title since we did.
I count 5 teams who have won the basketball national championship.

But Miami's academics are a boundary? BULL****. Eff that. If UF can win 4 titles with the 48th best ranking, we sure as **** can too. Instead we have idiots in the admin who refuse to use the sliding scale, who refuse to acknowledge why these players are here. It's absurd. Miami is a very good school, but it's not elite. It's not some top institution.

answered your own question. that's not a dig at anyone who's a fan and didn't go to um, but alums and students will always see it differently than anyone who didn't attend. this isn't unique to our fan base.

also, i hear the "stanford of the east, harvard of the south" thrown around like shalala came up with it, but as far as i know it was just a quote from our first 30 for 30. she's raising the university's academic profile because, well, it's her ******* job. just like the federal government, the president isn't the be-all, end-all. it's the board of trustees that pull the strings. she gets a lot of **** for the failures of the football program when the bot has just as much say in who is hired and what direction we go in. it's not some unilateral decision-making. as a university president, shalala is incredible for the students.

Spoken like someone with no clue what he's talking about.

They aren't in charge of day to day operations at UM, that's her job. Their fault is being apathetic and giving her too much power and the benefit of the doubt, as she's clearly over exerted herself. The financial strain she has put on our University and community is awful. I'd love to hear how that is incredible for students?

How about the overly strict disciplinary measures enforced on students for engaging in typical behavior of college students? Severe crackdown on student tailgating? Tuition increase to cover her spending? Destruction of our athletic programs?

I'd love to hear this.
 
I am a graduate of UM School of Law and I don't give a Folden about the school's academic ranking. It means nothing to me.

She has left us in virtual bankruptcy via her healthcare venture; much like the country. Her successor will be lucky to survive her mess. Football has been a profitable venture for many years. It got us into the ACC and that made basketball profitable. Donna's legacy is the biggest ncaa scandal in history that did not involve showers. Foote got knock into second place by her. They both were horrible embarrassments to the university and would have been fired by any real business.

1. the punishments handed out at um are handled on the day-to-day by the deans, who are overseen by certified ****, pat whitely. she started working for um before we won our first national championship and her job is bulletproof. shalala couldn't get rid of her if she tried.

2. student tailgating was the worst at the orange bowl because we were all corralled into a single lot and the police were shooting fish in a barrel. same goes for tailgating at sunlife before they did away with the established section (student arrests dropped significantly after they removed the student section) although i'm not sure what the parking/tailgating situation is right now since i left miami in 2012. the miami gardens police and city of miami both loved arresting students and since they had jurisdiction over the stadiums, they got as many underage drinkers as they could.

3. tuition costs increase everywhere, not just um. our tuition growth rate was actually reduced in 2008 due to the financial crisis. that is not to say that i agree with the cost of education because it's insanity, but it's par for the course.

4. the athletic dept. under shalala speaks for itself (not in a good way).
