Aaron Feld, Rugby Guy and the meaning of life

I have always wondered why NFL or College football haven't looked into snatching up a S&C Coach from Pro Rugby. I would imagine that higher level of conditioning is required for Rugby plus the brutal amount of contact without pads would require intense specialized training to prevent injury. We have an Ausi kicker I'm sure he could provide insight.

Dumb idea? Honest question open to real critical responses.
I mean maybe. I’m not a soccer guy and when I watch a match or two I always ask my father-in-law (who loves and played the sport) why teams don’t take a more aggressive approach, instead of looking for the perfect pass or shot. But he always says it wouldnt work but I feel this is a typical response from a fan who knows to much about a sport and isn’t open for Change.

New eyes on something is always good

Honest question because you seem to be knowledgeable. What can be done to prevent some of the injuries you mentioned?
Does William and Mary, where this guy is the football strength coach, not have as many injuries?

I'm partial to Feeley. I have some contacts deeply embedded within the S&C community here locally and nationally who spoke very highly of Feeley (and not well of our prior two strength coaches). So I'm not crazy about the change (if that's in fact the case). There's a little too much "look at me" for my liking. It's like he's a part time coach/part time social media influencer.

He's literally a professional motivator, gives speaking engagements. Seems like an incredible asset to have in a weight room. And he has a ton of certifications (which I thought was all that mattered to this board?) and a masters.

I just read about a kid who was 385lbs who he got into playing condition. He uses his popularity to motivate people to get in shape. He's also a family man and the kids and his co-workers and staff love him. Again, he worked at Bama under Saban as Asst S&C, was poached by Mario to be the main guy at Oregon, and then NICK F'ING SABAN at ALABAMA, who again, already WORKED with HIM and KNOWS him well, tried to get him back as THE head S&C Coach at the #1 football program in CFB.

But tell me more about what you don't like about his Instagram. :)

No idea, I’m was just curious why certain teams have more injuries than others and if there is any correction to SC program
The type of field that is played/practiced on matters a ton(grass/turf(type of turf)). Things like shoes/cleats matter. Individual athlete body types matter. Player diet and sleep matter. Then there is "randomness" as well. All that before looking at the S&C coach and their methods. Add in kids will go off an do their own additional workouts making the problem more complicated.

TIFWIW . . . I'm not insider nor am I Cribby . . . but I was told today by someone at UM that Feld turned down the UM offer and is staying at Oregon.

IMO, it kind of makes sense. Both McClendon and Mirabal are officially on board; if Feld was coming, you'd think it would have been announced by now? And with Lanning heading to Oregon, there is a UGA connection there.

Between the banks news and this , things have taken a nose dive. Feely has taken the Duke job so now we are down a S&C coach. Anyone have Tommy Moffet’s nbr.

It's not gospel. I'm not sure that he's even be asked to return to Oregon. Just passing along what I was told. Just saying that as of right now, it doesn't look promising. But like with all these things, I'm sure it's fluid.

I don't care about what Saban has to say about this topic.

S&C is an actual career now. There's now science to it. Schools now offer degrees. It's made a significant advancement in the last 2 decades. But that wasn't always the case. Older folks like Saban don't necessarily appreciate that b/c it was treated a lot differently when they were moving up the ranks. You think Saban is monitoring how his S&C guys teach technique? Or he's critiquing exercise selection or programming or offering tips on periodization? He's not. I don't think he's entitled to deference on this topic, much like Richt wasn't when he hired Felder.

I looked into Feld's background a little more. Check this out.

This is Feld's master: https://www.kinesiology.msstate.edu/undergrad-programs/clep

Now, read this. This is the master's in kinesiology that Miss St offers too: https://www.kinesiology.msstate.edu/applied/exercise-physiology.

He's got the former, not the latter.

I'm not going to pretend to know the curriculum offered by the school, but I'd likely be a helluva lot more comfortable if his degree was in kinesiology not something like this: "concentration are primarily prepared to work as exercise specialists in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs. Other areas of preparation include programs for individuals with diabetes, orthopedic limitations, arthritis, cancer, osteoporosis, and programs for the elderly, overweight and/or obese persons."

Whatever. He may not be coming. But I don't want a . . . pun intended . . . quack.

"I don't care what Saban says about the topic" might be the worst take on this board in a while, which is wild as you're 10x smarter than a lot of guys here.

LOL, you think Saban is some dinosaur stuck in the dark ages? Alabama's program is cutting edge and innovating in every possible way. They are figuring ways to utilize technology to advance player performance that no one has thought of. But you think Saban is just hiring some old school guy with antiquated techniques to run S&C. Otay. Go take a **** and read these:

Feeley can always come back, he's just a phone call away if they want him that badly.

Also there's Novak at Mich St, Wellman at Indiana, Joey Guarascio is up the street at FAU, Hughes at Army WP would be a great pick up.

Saban hired Ballou and Rhea because one of his LB'ers made the recommendation to him. Saban is a genius because he's willing to know where he's ignorant. They cut all of the Cochran out of Bama- the 4 quarter BS, power lifting, endless conditioning. Saban hired the right two guys and has trusted his hiring ability (a major flaw of most coaches is their lack of trust in their own hiring) and has let the duo do and buy whatever they need.

Well, thanks for saying I'm smarter than most here ;)

I have no doubt that he runs a fantastic program. He's the best college coach of our generation. That still doesn't mean that he understands the nuances of how to judge the qualifications of an an S&C coach. So the fact that he wanted Feld is nice and all, but it doesn't move the needle for me. Besides, as it's been stated here, Bama has the best talent. An S&C coach can't f* it up. It's why MJ's personal trainer has made a nice living solely from the fact he was MJ's trainer.
