Dear University of Miami Community,

Today I begin my tenure as president of the University of Miami. My arrival coincides with the start of a new academic cycle. One of the most wonderful aspects of university life is its sense of constant renewal. The opening of each semester brings to campus an influx of new students, faculty, and staff. Like many of you, I, too, start a new phase of my life today. I arrive with fresh ideas, shared aspirations, and boundless excitement to join the past and current members of the U community in a common journey.

I feel honored to serve as the sixth president of this great institution. Since being named by the Board of Trustees last April, I have spent time immersing myself in the University’s history. I have been impressed by the pivotal role it has played in the growth and prosperity of this city, this region, and beyond. Equally impressive are the contributions that our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and donors have made to advancing research, scholarship, and mutual understanding around the globe. As the University launches into its tenth decade, I believe this is a perfect opportunity to look back at where we have been, to make a close assessment of where we are today, and to use these vantage points to define a roadmap toward our second century.

The University of Miami’s story—past, present, and future—is a collective narrative told by the thousands of individuals who have developed the education, research, service, and spirit of community that are our hallmark. As part of my first 100 days in office, I am initiating an intensive listening project, and I invite you to share with me your aspirations and hopes for the U. My first Town Hall meeting on September 10 will offer an opportunity to hear from you and to learn about the many ways in which we can build on our rich legacy to take the University of Miami to its second century. At that meeting we will define a structured process to collect, collate, and synthesize the suggestions from all members of our community.

The focus on our possibilities and promise must be firmly grounded in our history. In that spirit, I would like to thank my predecessors in the president’s office for their visionary leadership and dedication. I am especially indebted to President Emerita Donna E. Shalala for taking the University to unprecedented heights.

Finally, I am also very grateful for the warm welcome that my family and I have received from our new U community. I feel a bit like a freshman myself, unpacking boxes and anticipating what the years ahead will hold for all of us who will call this remarkable institution our home.

I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by UM News on a number of topics. Click here for the videos and story.

I extend my own welcome to all new and returning students, faculty, and staff. Together, we will write the University of Miami’s next chapter.

I am down for going to the " Town hall meeting " and say my piece of the importance to return UM Football to competing for NCs.

Who's down with me!?

I support going, but like politicians and corporate heads, this is all public relations BS. They know what they are going to do in all major aspect of the organization, especially a major component like football to a college institution.

I've met him twice about 2 weeks apart and he remembered my name.

He really does listen and while Donna had an oily politician feel to her, Dr. Mora (His last name is really Mora) came off as very genuine. When he met seniors in the President's Office, he opened the floor for questions and I asked what his plan was to make the school better in all facets. He said, and this is a paraphrasing, "I know what I want done but the process for getting it done is what I have to discover. What works at Harvard does not necessarily work at Miami and vice-versa and the goals and focuses of Miami are also not necessarily the same as Harvard's." By contrast, Donna just bowled over everybody with her plan and opinion no matter what the rest of the administration thought for the most part. Dr. Mora compromises and includes others for a common goal. At the very least, he will let athletics be itself as opposed to permeating his opinion into it.

Was this before or after you heard Donna wanted Golden fired and he was a goner?

Tell me, do are you related to a guy named c7vette?

That is what I heard and what I thought was going to happen. I was wrong. When Donna's mother died on December 2nd, she packed it in for the rest of her presidency and even missed the Edna Shalala 5K. My apologies for being wrong.

I do not know c7vette.

If it will help partially restore my credibility, here is myself, Dr. Mora, my roommate, and Stuart Miller just paling around.

I HOPE you're wearing the BBB shirt.

Is there a chance Stuart Miller will help push things through to grant your shirt's wishes?

And can you get another shirt like that and gift it to the President?

I believe that "Town Hall Meeting" is a ticketed event only open to University personnel/students or you have to be personally invited by the University.

That is me with the #BBB shirt.

He actually commented on it. He looked at it and said, "Bring Back THE (which made me cringe) Butch." and Dr. Mora looked at him because he was in the dark and Stuart Miller. "Former football coach for the school. My dad helped hire him. He wants the job back."

I wanted to make that the topic of discussion but I didn't want to embarrass Stuart Miller or detract from the moment. This was fresh after his hiring and it just didn't seem appropriate.

I imagine thats exactly how it went down Ted.

Right after the Clintons showed you their email servers, and Donna told you we will be hiring Bill Belichick as our next Head Coach.

Well done.

At least you have introduced OUR LEADER to the concept.

You have planted a seed. Now, we'll see if he's as smart as he's supposed to be.

Al Golden's performance isn't appropriate

I appreciate your vote of confidence.

I did not get to see the email servers because the power was down and Belichick told Donna that he had to become part owner of Shula's 347 or no dice and the deal fell through.
