98 UCLA game

The Edge run where he put his hand on the ground and got a few more yards told me how special he was. That signified to me how good he was. I remember at the time me and my dad talking about that particular run.
I distinctly remember him looking like he was running in slow motion towards the edge and turning the corner on a bunch of runs. It didn’t seem like he was moving that fast but was faster than everyone else. If I remember correctly we just tried to run out the clock at the end of the first half but he got so many yards that butch changed his mind and we got points.

What most of y'all yungins don't know is those years only the hardest core of us mfers still followed along...whole nation had abandoned us.
BEST years ever tbh...
Was in a thanksgiving HS varsity bball tourney, pregame in my warmups, sitting in some random locker room and listening on the radio to us get absolutely mauled by Cuse.

I still despise Cuse because of that experience. And, I didn’t even watch the game. Last season’s loss didn’t help. I’d wish for a 1000 points on them this year.

ESPN just posted a flashback including a lot of the media coverage preceding the game -- didnt realize gameday was there. Don't think im alone but this is the game that made me a fan as a kid, interesting to see the context sourrounding it.

Dang. "As a kid"... I had suffered through the probation era at that point.

Yep. I got so much crap for being a UM fan especially in the south. People thought Miami would never be back. I told one of my teammates to go to Miami but instead he went to Colorado. Another guy I played against had a Miami offer but instead he thought Miami sucked and went to Arkansas (Cedric Cobb).

Injured, torn ACL I believe.
I did some research and I know he was on the sidelines but I read he was arrested the day before the game?

It’s been a long time but I forgot that ever happened. I’m guessing charges were dropped. Surprised to see he was arrested and I don’t remember it being a big deal because in those early post-probation days any slight infraction was big news by media that wanted this program given the death penalty.

Here’s what I found on Wayne’s injury:

Pretty sure they beat the NC State that gave FSU their only loss of the regular season. The hype train was rolling going in a disappointing 99
Until Dorsey surfaced the final four games. I believe we finished the season out with a victory over Joe Hamilton and GT in some lower tier bowl

I still say this game is the game that put Miami football back on track. Some will say '00 vs FSU and I get it but NO ONE gave them a chance in this game after the pummeling from Syracuse.

On side note, Miami repaid the debt with Syracuse 3 years later with that 59-0 BBQ at the Orange Bowl.

Just like we got revenge against the Washington Huskies in 2001 by thumping them 65-7. Revenge for them ending our 58 home game win streak and our only loss in 2000. But nothing was as sweet as winning a natty against Nebraska in an annihilation. I wish Coker didn’t call off the dogs that day.

Also smashed Penn State in happy value to avenge 99.

Mario doesn't forget Fran Browns antics last year. Bain on a mission

During that time period, I picked one home game a year to go to.
1998 UCLA
1999 WVU
2000 VT
2001 Washington
2002 VT

Got lucky seeing the UCLA game and Washington revenge night game.
All I remember from the 2000 VT game was that it was hot as **** in the upper deck north side, and the closed end zone was chanting overrated at Michael Vick, though he only played part of the game due to an injury IIRC.

2002 VT was a blowout and I remember Coker trying to get Dorsey the Heisman by using a trick play pass to Dorsey to the left near the goal line. Didn’t work out.

I'm sure you all do but I'll ask anyway....remember how close Moss was to a beautiful 4th down TD? Go to 16 minute mark

For fans who were too young/not born it's impossible to explain how shocking this win was coming off the heels of the debacle in the dome. I was at that game and it was a horrendous experience.

Cuse had blown us out at home the year before when we were terrible, and, even though the FSU game in '98 wasn't nearly as close as the final score showed, we hadn't gotten blown out on the scoreboard in any game and we had been playing extremely well leading up the Cuse game. We thought we had turned the corner. Then, historic shellacking.

I know I was able to convince my father to get tickets to the KO classic game in the Meadowlands because of what we showed against UCLA. That was a cool game. **** the Suckeyes! I do think the UCLA win got cheapened historically, because of the horrendous 3 game losing streak early in '99 and then the blowout against Va Tech. However, while I don't think it played a huge part in us becoming the dominant team we became from '00-'02, it definitely put a pretty high floor under the progrum. If you were a worrywart, after the SU game there was real question about whether the good parts of the '98 season has been fools gold and we were actually still the team that had gone 5-6 in '97. UCLA game shut those mope fans up (at least until ******* Chafee Fields then ECU the following year, lol). And nearly 30 years later the UCLA progrum has never recovered.

No, that was a patient Sr. Covington who backed up Ryan Clement for years. Iirc Covington would be a NFL 3rd stringer a few years for the Rams. No idea where he is today but I bet LinkedIn would tell me

Hah, the Heisman play turned into a pick 6. Didn’t McGahee have 6 TDs that day? F’ing incredible
