Barrow and recruiting

Yea, he sucks

Outliers are fun! He finished 46th in the ACC in 2010. 23rd in 2011. He wasn't top 50 in 2012 (out-recruited by Coach D I might add). 9th in 2013, 3rd in 2014 (your picture), and so far this year wasnt top 50 (6 other Miami coaches are). You can't single out a good year out of 7 years and say "look he's awesome he doesn't suck".

I like him as much as the next guy, but he's an overrated recruiter by most. Hes good, but very far from replaceable and even improvable. On top of that, he's **** near a terrible LB coach. Development at that spot over the last 7 years has been awful outside of McCarthy, Spence, and Perryman, and those guys could have been developed by a pet rock. I wish Barrow the best, but don't let loyalty and nepotism cloud the fact that it's going to be easy to improve on his work.

He was our top recruiter in 2014,2013, 2011, & 2008 according to 247. Those aren't outliers. If he's not good at recruiter than everyone else our staff must be really bad since everyone else didn't perform up to his standard.

I really believe LB play had more to do to complexity, mental errors, and lack of talent like Coach macho said Coach D told him. Our LB group was performing fine from 2007-2011.

Guys Barrow has performing in the NFL: current NFL linebackers Tavares Gooden, Darryl Sharpton, Colin McCarthy and Spencer Adkins and the graduated Spence. He also has perryman who will be in the league this year.

I'm not saying the man is elite at recruiting or coaching, but give credit where credit is due.

Barrow was **** good idk wtf everybody's talking about especially when he owned BTW except for the 1 kid who decided to play us but for the most part when he nt hard for a local kid he got him. Barrow will be missed and Once a Cane Always a Cane!!!!

I would say yes to Barrow's departure having an effect on recruits...but two things:

1) It's not like he's leaving because things went sour for him here. He's leaving to take care of a sick family member. The difference in perception between the two is meaningful.

2) Look at the pieces we moved around on the staff. I think that we're a better staff overall with Barrow's departure than we were yesterday. Hurlie Brown's going back to defense (his natural side of the ball to coach). We now have Ice Harris as an official coach for the RB's, meaning he is now allowed to recruit on more than just social networks...plus, RB's and offense is his natural side of the ball to coach. Kevin Beard isn't as big of a name as Barrow was, but we've got another Canes Alumnus joining the staff...and his connections in Broward and S. Florida in general will help us in recruiting tremendously...and he has always been active on social media (esp. Twitter) to boot.

I don't think it's going to hurt much, if at all.

I completely agree with you there and 1 more thing to add is he'll still have a relationship with recruits and as long as he's still on good terms with the staff and idk why he wouldn't then he's still going to help us in some capacity so hey im happy Barrow has his priorities straight and is with his mom because that's mmost important

I agree don't burn a bridge who is still all about the U! He will be still be huge impact for Miami in recruiting .

Isn't Barrow saying that it is a sabbatical, not that he is leaving the team for good?

I have no idea about the coaching side, but on the recruiting side it seems we have brought in more than enough people with strong community connections to replace him. Three years ago this would have been a huge detail because he was our only liaison to the local community. Now, it's almost an afterthought.

Also, with Golden's attention to detail I am sure he has called every single recruit for whom he is responsible, explained the situation, and made introductions to their new contact point. Recruits love their moms and seeing Barrow putting family before all else can only bolster our reputation as the best family environment in college football (and I don't think that is a Golden marketing shtick, I firmly believe that is what we have always had and what he continues to build).

How will Barrow leaving impact recruiting? Anyone with some insight? Would love the feedback from Shaq's dad on this since it's his son's position coach.

TIA.

The impact is huge. He played a huge roll in Shaq's commitment to Miami. He was our connections.. when we had questions or concerns we contacted Coach Barrow, that connection has now been severed. Does this changes Shaq's commitment to UM... No... I think not. We do however need a new connection. Somebody we feel comfortable with... Darrion is working on getting me a contact number now for Coach Swasey. Hopefully Coach Barrow's replacement has the same desires for Shaq (really genuine about Shaq being apart of the program). But what more important than Shaq's recruitment... is the lost to a great staff member at Miami. I'm not abreast of all the history of Coach Barrow's recruiting and player development. What I can attest to is.. he immediately won over the confidence of my wife and I... He is truly a Hurricane at heart... He was at one of our games recruiting Darrion and Shaq. He and I were talking down on the field after a game ppl every where. He was busy recruiting Shaq when he noticed a young lady wearing a Hurricane jacket... He said excuse me for one second.. then approached the young lady in the jacket.. and said ma'am.. I like your jacket and she smiled and started talking with him about it... Not knowing the young lady was the mother of Bennie, Brian and Al Blades (whos nephew is the QB on Shaq's Team) he went out of his way to acknowledged someone else who obviously had feelings for the U. And if he is leaving for family reasons... I have that much more respect for him... having his priorities in order.... He is missed already and may God add an extra blessing to he and his family.

Wow, this says everything about Coach B and how special he was with players and families. I have one question though and that is if Barrow really says that it was all about the family and he will still be around the program a good amount and staying close to Shaq will that affect Shaqs decision also?

Thank you, as always, for your insight. I hope your son gives coach Brown & our staff the time to show your son what his addition means to the program. As you can see, we lost a member of the Cane family for family reasons (& prayers go to coach Barrow & his family) but we brought in another member of the Canes family in Beard. because that's what the university of Miami is. It's more than just classes & athletics; it's becoming part of a family.

Straight from the horses mouth barrow was an excellent recruiter and great man he was a Dade county presence for sure and a hurricane legend

The cloud only affected Golden, not Barrow apparently.

Wow, amazing insight. I hope Hurlie can build that same type of confidence.

According to 247, Barrow was at least partially responsible for recruiting Chad Thomas, Joseph Yearby, Trevor Darling, Darrion Owens, Michael Smith, Demetrius Jackson, Chris Herndon, Juwon Young, Tyre Brady, Ryan Mayes, Terry McCray, and Trayone Gray. For 2015, he has his hand in with Claude George, Jamie Gordinier, and Charles Perry. As far as I can tell, he has been instrumental in recruiting and his loss will hurt. His coaching abilities have been average to be kind but the people acting like this is a small loss are fooling themselves.

This. We have major 2014 LB talent, top 2015 and 2016 LB recruits lined up and the #1 MLB in college football. You're crazy to question what Barrow has done!

A great cane, and an even better human being. Wish him nothing but the best. Hopefully Shaq and the rest of the recruits find the same connection with Hurley Brown, who by all accounts is a great guy also.
