2023 5 star K/P Tyler D White Offered

There's no such thing as a 4 or 5 star kicker/punter on any of the major recruiting sites. The star ranking is loosely based on projected NFL draft slot. Since kickers are almost never drafted, the highest they'll rate one is 3 stars.

For example, 247 had Andy Borregales rated as the #3 kicker in the nation his senior season. He was given a low 3 star ranking.

The lefty Polish kicker that went to fsu and was drafted by the Raiders was a first round pick. Can't remember his name.

Sebastian Janikowski

Yep, and the Raiders regretted it too. He had a long NFL career but no way you get the value of a 1st rounder back from a kicker. I'm not even sure back then they had 1st round pay slots for kickers defined cause it was so unusual.

This is a great offer. K/P/LS have a bigger impact on games than anyone wants to admit, no reason we shouldn't seek an advantage in any phase. Kickers and long snappers have an evaluation independent of the composite sites as well, something I hope (assume) we are using as a resource. You get a top rated kid and you can just forget about that position for the next 3 years which is quite a luxury.

Totally agree.

I remember that Jim Tressel, at OSU, used to personally evaluate and recruit kickers as they were so important to the style of game he wanted to play. Think of what a weapon we've had at punter for the past two years.

I fell down the Kohl's rankings rabbit hole.
-There are 15 5-star punters in the 2023 class. Tyler White is #3.
-There are 26 5-star kickers in the 2023 class. White is also on the list of kickers as a 4.5-star, tied at #100 with 107 others.
-In the 2022 class, there are 58 5-star kickers. The kid we signed, Trevor Weldon, is a 4.5-star, ranked #70.
-Bonus - our 2022 long snapper commit, Gabe Landers, is the #21 long snapper in the class, which makes him a 5-star.

Makes sense, and we as canes fans should know very well what a kicker means. At least anyone old enough. The number of games that have been decided by a missed or made kick between us and FSU alone is cause for a scholarship kicker.

Didn't the Raiders also draft Ray Guy in the first round back in the 70's? lol

Yeah. But Russell Erxleben was drafted even higher, #11 overall. Kicked a 67 yard FG when he was at Texas, and he also punted. He was a 3x All-American as a punter.

There are a few different kicker specialists out there that all have heavy bias towards the kids that train with them.

He has the best leg I’ve ever seen as a punter. Ever.

This. I'm pretty sure the last "5*" kicker we had was Bubba Baxa, who saw Kosi pipe his GF down on social media then yipped his way into the portal. Maybe Andy was a 5*? I can't remember.
Imagine losing your gf to Kosi. It'd crush any self confidence you had.

I guess next is 5 star cheerleaders... Mario might as well bring in some dimes there while he is at it.
