With all the spread offenses you see today there's almost no point in running a 4-3 anymore. (or at least no point in making it your base)

You have to match personnel for personnel...so when the offense has 3-5 WR's on the field you're gonna sub in an extra DB (nickel) anyway. When you play spread offenses you're gonna find yourself in the 4-2-5 basically all game. Might as well make it your base defense if the spread if the primary offense you see on your schedule.

People like to pretend the 4-2-5 is a whole new defense but it's really just a 4-3 with a Nickel instead of a Sam LB.
It used to be a package that everybody used on 3rd down but now it's become a base for many teams. (just like the spread used to be a 3rd down offense but now it's a primary)

Ahhhh, the evolution of football. :fap:

Bud Foster been doing this for years. his best group was with Cody Grimm as the hybrid. Mark Dantonio had a really good defense in 2013 with Denicos Allen as the hybrid.

Im hoping D. Smith can take on that role for us this year and transcend our defense.

Is that not what a "Rover" is?

I'm all for the 4-2-5

TCU has got lit up a handful of times over the last few years. Patterson is a good coach, but TCU wins the ship in 14 if he keeps Baylor under 58 points.

if he was able to get Miami talent thatd be different. for the recruits he gets... Patterson fields a good defense.

Coach, what kind of offense did Houston use to run back in the day when they were hanging 50and 60 on everyone? Wasn’t it some sort of spread hurry up deal? Our old 4-3 handled it just fine in the OB as I recall. Of course we had faster LBs back then.

Huh?

TCU’s blitz package is entirely man based. Smokes Dogs Bullets etc are all man to man blitzes.

Diaz is a zone blitz guy, and he does it way too much.

We also dont run split field coverage and teaching it would require a complete rework of his entire scheme.

4-2-5 is a FORMATION, not a defensive system. You can literally run any scheme from it.

love the 4-2-5 with Bandy playing free... He's free to roam the field.. That's how he got that pick 6 vs notre dame.. Thing of beauty

It was what we all call a spread today.

We handled it because we were so far ahead of everybody defensively. We were running a 4-3 but our Outside Linebackers ran like Safeties. They couldn't make our guys look bad in space.

Exactly. Darrin Smith running step for step with their killing WR made their coach rethink his career choices. We might have some problems with those SEC type power run teams but I would like to go back to those fast safety like outside LBs even if they do not weigh in at ideals. As long as we get Miami quality DTs (which have been sadly missing for too long but seem to be showing back up) and play with JJ's aggression, speed will make mistakes less costly. "Move the speed forward" was always the magic.

And unsurprisingly, VT was one of D. Smith's first offers. Said it at the time, he is the exact type of evaluation they seemingly always hit on for their scheme.
