3rd Down Woes

By the way, Army was among the leaders in TOP, while also among the leaders in 3rd down conversions, and 3rd downs allowed. Now, we are never going to run that O, so we shouldn't expect our numbers to ever look like that, but it does show the importance of 3rd down conversions and TOP, and how it directly impacts the D.
 
I have confidence the oline will be better as we get further from Golden’s recruits. That’s will help somewhat.

Qb is and always will be the big ?. Rosier is inaccurate and has trouble reading the field/going through progressions, that’s a recipe for disaster on 3rd down when the D knows you’re throwing the ball.

"B" for certain, buy I'll add play calling ingenuity to the issue as well. With the weapons we have our 3rd down play calling should never be stereotypical. Defenses should never know what option we'll run out of any formation including the I Power set. Our 3rd down play calling must be more diverse.
 
My question is our lack of offensive creativity our system or is it because we have a QB who is limited in what he can do? because going back and seeing richts offense when he was calling plays at FSU and UGA have a lot of motions and stack looks, so i feel our lack of third down conversions and offensive droughts has more to do with whos behind center than the system

It's an issue we've had going back numerous years. It's either big play or nothing at Miami. Too many inconsistencies at QB and OL for far too long. Defenses are going to continue to gang up to stop the run if we don't have a QB who can hurt them with his arm.

I seem to remember back in the day with Vinny, that third and 5 or so was a problem. He was the best ever with 30 year passes but not so much with the short ones. Then going forward we seemed to have problems with 3rd and short. We scored from distance just fine and that covered it up. Pls those defenses added scores of their own for us. We were never a pound the rock team; we sure could run the rock but the pounding part was never our game.

One of the reasons the nole games were always so close was that neither team could get many, if any cheap scores when playing each other. We both had speed on D. We overcame our 3rd down problems by not needing to many downs to score against everyone else.

Some of these idiots don't understand how incompetent Rosier is and how that can cripple what you can do as a signal caller. Instead they think Richt forgot how to coach, the game passed him, and he needs a lobotomy.

In order to lack predictability you have to have a QB that understands what you want to do and execute it.

If he cant do that then why give him more than he can chew?

Would like to see how many 1st and Goals inside the 5 we failed on as well. Seems like to many times we could put a game away with a TD and since we couldn't convert on short yardage we settled for FG's.

When you factor in that Rosier actually could use his feet, and did on occasion to get a first down, this number is even more alarming. I know we have had problems on 3rd down for years now, but last season was probably the lowest point we could have ever reached in this category. It is also the single biggest sign of weakness at the most important position. When Richt said Rosier needs to improve, I think he understated it a bit. We need drastic improvement from the position to get this number up, not just marginal improvement.

Spring ball can't get here fast enough for this Cane fan.

The defensive issues on third down were, to me, even more maddening than the offensive issues. I seem to recall many times per game when the defense would actually look great on first and second down, force the other team into a third and long, and then let them off the hook. As a fan, I found that extremely demoralizing.

Yes. Too often, our offensive series is the following:

1st down: Run, Homer gets stuffed or only a 1-2 yard gain
2nd down: Pass, Rosier gets ball batted down at LOS
3rd down: Pass, incomplete

Hada lot to do with with our tackling. It cant be stated enough how much Corn, Mal, and Jenkz covered our young linebackers mistakes.

Our tackling was atrocious this year. We struggled to get guys on the ground on third down.

Our best tackler was JJ. McCloud, Knowles and Redwine probably gave up majority of the third downs with missed tackles
Especially McCloud.

Oh yeah we definitely need to improve on that too. I remember it was 7-3 Miami, Pinckney just enforced a fumble and we were on the 50 yard line and didn’t do sh*t. Happened too many times
