3rd down conversion

After Central Michigan, think I've figured it out.

We're intentionally putting out bad film so as to catch our October foes by surprise. It's the most reasonable conclusion from now being 10/44 with 2 non-power 5 opponents on our schedule.

Coming into the game, CM was 115th in the nation, giving up 53% on 3rd down. We were 1/10.

This is such a horrible stat. Unbelievable that everyone sees all the flaws with our team but our coaching staff seems to not know how to fix this. I’m convinced that Manny Diaz has already discussed it with his staff that it is in their best interests to perform at a mediocre level which would be “ acceptable” for a first year head coach with new coordinators. They want their jobs so the best way to do that is to demonstrate an upward trajectory. So going 6-6 or 7-5 may very well have been the goal from the start. Another staff stealing money ...smh.

Yep. Absolutely brutal. When I posted this last week, people actually responded with ‘just enjoy the win (over Bethune) and don’t nitpick at negative stuff.’ This is one of those metrics that truly carries over into every game and makes *the* difference in meaningful games. I’m not sure I remember when we were this bad on this metric.

Partly on having an OL that gets us in scary down and distance scenarios.
Partly on mental mistakes and penalties that get us in scary down and distance scenarios.
Partly on playcalling (like PA from under Center into a deep drop) that gets us in scary down and distance scenarios.

The good thing is it’s not one thing. It’s lots of things. And, it’s comprehensive and complicated to fix. So we’ve got that going for us.

This is why 3rd down conversion is misleading in of itself.
We weren’t efficient yesterday. 10.9 yards to gain means you didn’t do **** on 1st and 2nd down. Why then would you be expected to do anything on 3rd?
We have to get more efficient on offense.
There’a nothing misleading about it. Anyone who looks at 3rd down conversion stat understands the context of it being an issue of getting ‘behind schedule.’ It’s not looked at as ‘we’re really good on 1st and 2nd down, but somehow can’t call and execute plays on 3rd.’
