3 ways I expect Clemson to attack us

We are AWFUL against QBs that can run (worse than normal, which says a lot). Watson will be running all over us. We couldn't keep Armstrong in the pocket vs Neb and Watson is 10x the QB he is

The read option is going to kill us, and watch out when they go play-action off of it. I believe their slot receiver is already open.

**** i see his potential ability and vision. But that cut was tentative. Not violent as sudden.

With that said, every week that passes,He is healthier. Might be mental too.

As for MIAMI, I wound make him beat us with his legs. Take a few hits and see how tough he is. In a perfect world, I Dont see Clemson out athleting us. But, the Golden effect can't be tangibly measured.

So I'm sure we will play off soft zone and get stretched, finnessed and monkey rolled in the process

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but I expect them to pace us quite a bit. We still haven't shown the ability to play up with pace. We regularly have trouble even getting lined up. We're late with pressures; we're late with Safety movements. I hope we're prepared.

I somewhat disagree. I think they'll primarily run the option/read option until we can stop it and run Watson at us until we can stop it!

if we play offense like the first half of FSU '14 or the first half of NU '15, we have a chance to win. otherwise, the odds seems stacked against us, especially on the coaching level. i will be there anyways.

Lu, what do you expect for them to do defensively against us?

I've watched Clemson twice this year. I don't think I have enough info to really provide much. If I were them, at least from what I've watched, it'd be heavy zone coverages and zone blitzes. There's that saying for QBs about WRs: "if he's even, he's leaving." That's how I feel about our opponent's after we reveal our initial gameplan.

Go back and watch the first half against Cincinatti. Slot guy had a free 6 yards basically every snap.

Question for Lu, why do we religiously line up in base against spread teams? Would it not make sense to start in a sub package so that you don't get stuck with your base on the field during the hurry up?

I think any type of blitz is the way Clemson could lose this game. Plays into our best players hands and away from our weaknesses up front. If I'm Clemson I rush 4 and at the most 5.

Mix in a blitz every now and then to keep em off balance, but otherwise make our offensive line block the 4 guys in front of them and force Kaaya to throw against 7 or 8 in pass coverage. Only way we beat that is if Coley has developed a better understanding of coverages and what route combos work best against them.

I feel like this is true every game. GoldenShowers I think? showed in that thread about pre-snap fronts. Trying to outsmart the other team or somesuch nonesense and just giving away space and matchups.

Question for Coach D'onofrio; not me. I don't know why he chooses to say in base as often he does. If i had to guess, and it's a guess, it may have to do with the traditional thinking of "we must stop the run first" and he uses the set he thinks is best to do that.

I don't get it, though, because that concept is not foreign to the NFL - where they have actual LBs who can cover - and you still see extra DBs more often than not.

Many effective zone blitzes are 5 man. With what we do with our WR routes, fire zone blitzes (and I know many people aren't fans; especially now with all the spread elements around) are poison to Kaaya.

Yep! Good defensive minds have issues containing QB's that can run.
Al and Dorito are awefull at it.

play #8 and 9 the whole game, Kamalu is the new Pierre, and trent harris is too small and slow to play in this big boy game, play your big boys a lot of snaps, the edges are gonna be huge

But this is one (of the many things) that I don't get about our defensive scheme, strategy and personnel - what extra benefit are we getting against the run do we get by keeping our base in against 3 and 4 wides when our OLBs/rush ends are lining up over the slot WR or between the slot WR and the OT/TE?

When we have a guy like McCord out in the slot, he ends up unable to do much against quick slot WRs, is in no man's land as a pass rusher, and isn't able to do much against the run being out of the box. I focused on McCord and Harris a bunch of times last week when they tried to cover the slot WRs, and they were, unsurprising, completely overwhelmed.

Instead of having extra guys there to stop the run, we often end up with 5 guys in the box against spread teams, as our 2 OLBs are lined up on slot WRs. Or, we end up shading our OLBs toward the slot, and drop a safety down to cover, but not close enough to alter the WR's route, so the slot WRs often have 5+ yards of cushion, and we're asking our safeties to then cover that WR, who has a free release, in space.

I simply can't understand why we wouldn't go nickel, with Grace and another LB (now Owens) as our LBs, so that we're better able to defend against the run, while also giving us the speed we need to defend the pass. I'm not going to pretend to be an Xs and Os expert, but the results of our defense speak for themselves.
