Back when I was healthy last spring, Miami was my top school," Weldon said. "As soon as Coach Richt came over, it became a huge point for me to make it down there. Especially with Jon (Richt) as the quarterbacks coach, I wanted to make sure I met everybody. I can tell they're going to get it going again."
Weldon missed his junior season due to a torn ACL. As a sophomore, he connected on 123 out of 185 passes for 2103 yards with 20 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
Weldon's father, Casey, played quarterback at Florida State and finished second in the 1991 Heisman Trophy voting. Mark Richt happened to be his position coach in Tallahassee so the family connection dates back well before Cade was even born.
"I knew them as a young kid so it's been cool to make that jump from being family friends to actually getting recruited," Weldon said. "That relationship with them could end up being huge. They were on me at Georgia but having that offer at Miami is a great feeling."
The staff had a pretty basic message for Weldon about their quarterback plans and how he fits in.
"They told me they're looking to take two quarterbacks in this class as far as right now," Weldon said. "They're ready to accept my commitment whenever I'm ready to do that. If they take somebody else, that's not really going to have an impact on the decision I make. I'll go to Miami if I feel it's right because there will be competition anyways. I don't back away from that, it might step my game up if anything."
Watching practice gave Weldon an idea of who the competition would be should he pick Miami.
Kentucky, South Carolina, Temple, Toledo, USF, and Wake Forest are Weldon's six other offers. Where do the Hurricanes stand and who else is in the mix?
"It's real serious, I would say they're pretty high on my list," Weldon said. "I'm still weighing my options and working to get my knee right while things play out this spring. I think Texas A&M, North Carolina, and West Virginia are the others I'm strongly considering. They're all interested to see how I come back from this injury before they offer."
