Looking out over the course of 21 seasons:

  • 2006 - Amazing that we entered the season with just six wide receivers
  • 2009 - 2011: Because we signed seven wide receivers in the 2008 class, we failed to sign any in 2009 and secured only three in the 2010 and 2011 classes.
  • Wide receiver recruiting really picked up under Mario. Prior to the 2024 season, we had only one class where we signed three blue chip freshmen receivers (2008). We've done that two of the last three seasons

And Moore barely played in 2006 because of suspensions, George Robinson never saw the filed, Shields was a DB playing WR, and Khalil Jones had hands of stone. What a WR core.

By midseason (after a 5-2 start) we were down to just three receivers. Ridiculous.

What baffles me is that in 2006 we were all in on Sam Shields and Preston Parker. Great. Even if you got both and Robinson, you still have only 7 on the roster. Coker should have been trying to get 4 or even 5, and to have a few three stars with upside in that group. But no, it was Shields and Parker. And we lost Parker on signing day and had almost no fallbacks.

The bad old days. Recruit the top guys and pray.
