2027 Portal QB discussion

If we go into the portal for a QB, it needs to be Lopez or Atkinson. Otherwise, roll with the room we have.

People constantly talk down on CJ Bailey and I hate to break it to you but Simmons ain't better. There really isn't much difference between the two, and you could argue Simmons has had the benefit of better coaching after spending two years with Kiffin. Yet he's already had four games with a completion percentage around 50% this season, and at the rate he's going, I wouldn't be surprised if that becomes the norm as the season progresses. He's still got the Texas and Georgia defenses to deal with. It's not like Simmons is working with a lack of talent at receiver, either. He's got quality receivers around him, so we can't just blame his woes on the supporting cast. At some point, you have to look at the QB himself and evaluate what he's putting on the field.

I said in another thread that I needed to see more of Simmons. I've seen enough since then to make my decision. I'm passing. There is no way Ole Miss makes it as far as they did last season with Simmons at the helm.

I trust the staff.

They’ve obviously been extremely aggressive in going after portal QB’s and will be spending top of market. Plus Miami is now on 3 years of boosting a portal QB’s draft stock.

The only way we ride with Nickel is if the staff actually thinks it gives us the best chance to win.

Brad Kaaya was good for us in 2016, but maybe if you consider team record, he wasn't as good as Dorsey.
Kaaya would have been a better QB with a redshirt year. They brought him out too soon and Richt wanted him to move on too quickly. Brad went through 2 or three OC's in his time here and got manhandled by FSU almost every time we played them. His draft stock tanked, although we did when a bowl game against West Virginia (if memory serves) in Mark's first year.

He went in the Seventh Round to Detroit. Kiss of Death. He should have stayed a year.

I don't think it makes sense after this season though. We got a 5 star QB coming in, and supposedly an even better one lined up 2 years later. We'd be telling Abrams he's not going to play for his first two years, and hurt our credibility with Cypher. We're bringing in truly elite HS QBs now for the first time in decades. I do think we should bring the best 1-year transfer QB we can in after this season.

So you would rather pander to the possibility of Abrams playing as a true freshman than have the best QB possible for Mali's last season?

No. Sorry if I wasn't clear. Assuming Mensah doesn't come back I want us to get the best 1-yr portal QB we can find. That would give us a year to evaluate Abrams and decide whether we want to turn the offense over to him.

We haven't had much success with HS QBs for decades, but Abrams (and I think Cypher will be too) is the highest rated QB we have signed since Kyle Wright. I don't think it's wise to go out and get a portal QB who would be expected to start for multiple seasons at the same time Abrams enrolls as freshman.

JKS has regressed considerably.

No thanks, unless you’re ready to deal with growing pains. The looming Financial investment isn’t worth the time needed to fix his inability to read a defense. Dawson’s had success with relatively proven guys, not projects. JKS has talent, and it’s clear he needs a reset. But he’s certainly a project to whoever takes him on.

You cannot waste Toney’s junior year. Not under any circumstances. There should be much better options out there, even if y’all want the multi-year route instead of renting a year.
I agree with this, however upgrading the QB position shouldn't be dependent on one players Jr season
