2027 Portal QB discussion

Not being able to read coverages is a problem . Tossing it into double coverage is the pass the Beck tossed up and got picked the last play in the championship game
I cannot truly judge a young qb playing with other benchers in mop up duty early in a season.

I also will not argue with you. If you want another transfer QB that is your opinion and I respect it.

wouldn't Nickel just transfer if we bring in another portal QB? why even bother recruiting HS QBs unless were explicitly telling them its for a backup role?
These guys have a chance to prove we don't need a portal QB. They're in practice every day. The coaches have a good feeling if they're ready or not.

Of course the coaches would prefer to start a guy we recruited out of high school.. But if there's a proven guy in the portal that gives us a better chance to win, the coaches have a responsibility to recruit them. Their number one priority is to win games. If that means we lose a promising QB for a proven QB, oh well.

By you're same argument we shouldn't have brought in Cam Ward or Carson Beck or even Darian Mensah this year because of Emory Williams and Judd and Nickel.

The coaches are still elevating the floor of the QB room from high school..look at who we have coming in. Abrams and Cypher are now committing instead of lower ranked recruits. So whatever they're doing is working.

"Win and they will come."

Do we think Mario lied to keep our QB commits?

Can’t imagine Mario gon waste Mali’s last season with an unproven QB
Eventually we will have to play our inhouse developed QBs. If we don't, we will lose credibility when recruiting QBs. This issue of "wasting" a season with player "x", will always be a thing. The year after that it will be: why would we want to "waste" a season with A1, Nick, and Brysen.

Disagree , I don’t want to play a kid who’s. Not ready and passing over a stud qb

We now have history going with three big time portal QB's in the last three years. What should we take away from this experience? What should be the optimal strategy to ensure we have the best QB possible each year in order to be in the BCS playoffs each year?

Option 1: Just keep signing the best, most experienced and proven QB's from the portal (and as Mensah showed, inducing them to enter the portal to come to UM). UM is a fantastic and proven place to come to for a top QB stuck at a school that (a) isn't going to compete for anything, and (b) doesn't best showcase his skills for the NFL draft. We should always have a great OL to protect, a top run game and great WR's to throw to. Going forward, UM should be able to pull a proven, top QB each year. This strategy also helps recruit the best WR's as they know they'll play with a guy who can help them shine.

Option 2: Go with QB recruited and groomed in-house. Inevitably this brings more uncertainty than Option 1 given the reality of no track record of proven success. If we go with Nickel next year, how sure can we be that he'll play as well as a proven portal QB and get into the BCS playoffs? Not very imo.

Part of me wants to see us play and groom QB's we've recruited out of High School. The other part of me asks why?

Pre-portal you pretty much had to go with QB's recruited out of HS. But it's a new world and the portal allows us to hand select one of the best QB's in college football each and every year.

I come down on the side of going with a top portal QB every year. Some might observe that we won't be able to recruit top QB's out of HS. My response is, who cares so long as we have a proven, top guy at the position.

I can see going for a transfer QB. Luke would have another year to develop and then would still have two more years left…

If you are team Nickel this thread is not for you. This is solely for potential options outside the program. Yes, I know what Mario said in an interview from 2026.

My short list so far

Austin Simmons
Kamario Taylor
Malik Washington
Mason Heintschel

Names that are intriguing.
Cutter Boley
Drake Lindsay
