MFers had me looking up Parker Navarro highlights... man Mensah is an incredible pull at the buzzer. He likely would have been the #1 portal rated player over Sorsby, Leavitt, etc. if he entered earlier. I think he's tight with Cam Ward and I seem him following a similar path.

Few things shock me in CFB and this is truly one of them. Let's get him signed!

Being there's 8 months to get it sorted I'm not sure there's a "risk" as described here. Plus that's a really bad look for Duke and probably doesn't help them long term. If a guy wants out, they're out. You're just creating a distraction and mess for yourself. Mensah may have complicated things for himself by waiting til the last minute. But ultimately there's nothing Duke can really do to stop him.

If a college team refuses to enter a player into the NCAA transfer portal, the player generally can't officially communicate with other schools or begin the transfer process, but they can try unique methods like unenrolling to join another team (risky) or wait for specific exceptions (like a coaching change), while the school might still keep them on scholarship if they're valuable, but also might pull it if they're not a key player. Essentially, the team controls the official entry, limiting the player's immediate options unless the player forces the issue by withdrawing or finding a loophole.

What happens if they don't enter the portal:
  • Locked In (Temporarily): The player remains on their current team for the semester, unable to explore other options freely.
  • Scholarship Uncertainty: The school can choose to honor the scholarship or potentially withdraw it, especially if the player isn't a star; they aren't automatically guaranteed to keep it if they don't enter.

Player options:
  • Force the Issue (Unenroll): A player can unenroll from their current school and enroll elsewhere without officially entering the portal, but this is a high-risk move, often without immediate eligibility.
  • Wait for Exceptions: Players get special windows if their coach leaves or is fired, allowing them to enter the portal within a specific timeframe.
  • Withdraw: If a player did enter the portal but doesn't find a new spot, they can sometimes withdraw and return to their original team, but this isn't guaranteed.

Team leverage:
  • Star Players: Schools are more likely to negotiate or allow a star player to enter the portal (and might keep their scholarship active) because they don't want to lose them entirely.
  • Less Prominent Players: For players lower on the depth chart, a refusal might be more common, as the school loses less by forcing them to stay or leave without a scholarship.

Key takeaway:
  • No Automatic Right: Entering the portal isn't an automatic transfer; it's just permission to talk, and the school controls that initial step.
