2026 Men's Basketball Recruiting

Caleb Gaskins, Columbus (Miami, Fla.) 6-8 PF (Miami)
Needs to make faster decision with the ball to bring out the best in his game. Gaskins uses his powerful shoulders well to create separation.

Brandon McCoy Jr., Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) 6-4 SG (Undecided)
Physical specimen was using good ball fakes and brought the right attitude to his team. Continuing to polish up his decision-making at the point of attack will take his game to the next level and McCoy has the burning desire to get better.

It was disappointing to hear the Tru Washington entered the transfer portal today.
However, it now gives us a scholarship for Kevin Thomas.

Sounds like a player who likely won't be ready to contribute much next season. Classic HS v. Portal recruiting dilemma and these days most coaches are preferring Portal.

Evaluators call Thomas a 3 but does he shoot well enough to score from the perimeter? Athleticism/leaping ability and dunking seem to be his calling card. Apparently an active, capable defender.

You absolutely take a top 100 player if they want in

No, this is not the case; he is much more than that. Buddy is underrated.

34 for 44 on free throws = 77% and 60 for 136 on 3 pointers = 44% his senior year.

His junior year shot 30 for 46 = 65% from free throws and 70 for 178 = 39% on 3 pointers.

Sophomore year 54 for 71 = 76% on free throws and 58 for 153 = 38% on 3 pointers.

Definitely could use that 77 and 44%

Kevin Thomas has a reputation of being a good shooter from his time in high school, travel 🏀 and Team USA events.
Most people would say he is a shooter first (hopefully that doesn't raise expectations to an unrealistic level) but he has the length and athletic ability to be a very good perimeter defender.
That combination is what makes him so intriguing for most college coaches who want to emphasize defense.
From a roster construction standpoint, my priority list starts with starting C to replace Udeh Jr, starting PG to replace Trey, with shooting being 3rd on the list.
Given that Tru Washington has entered the portal, Miami now has 4 scholarships available (right now but of course things can change by the time you read this).
Given that Dorvat can play PG, Malovec at the 3, Marcus Allen at the 4 (expecting that he is healthy) and Altuntas at the 5 is pretty much your bench with Maddox, Keyes and Laboy on the roster.
I can absolutely see Kevin Thomas replacing Tru Washington in that spot. Different player but he would add some size and shooting to the 2nd unit.
I feel confident that he would knock down 1 or 2 three point shots per game but of course, with Coach Lucas, ultimately your ability to defend determines your playing time.
He would probably take a similar path that Dante Allen did this past season where the first 15 games are an adjustment but the last 15 regular season games, everything slows down because he has adjusted to the college game.
I think Kevin Thomas would be a great fit in Coral Gables.

Imo Kevin has a great stroke, both catch and shoot and off the dribble. I don’t really put much into HS percentages but they were good as said in another post. So he definitely has a lot to work with. I think he possibly has something we missed this year. He can shoot from deep, get to the midrange off dribble and shoot, and also has great vision and is unselfish. ****, I don’t even think his scouting report of his athleticism being his biggest upside is right. Kid can hoop. In fact, I think he can play the 2. So if he wants to get better I think he balls.
