I could see Okla. making a run.. if, BIG IF their QB is back to pre injury form.. But that defense is a problem for most..
Good stuff, have been saying it for awhile, defenses finally caught up and alot of the stuff guys were doing in NFL have trickled down.. You watch ANY of the older prolific spread offense and in those early days the defense had no rules it seems, DEs didnt know who to key on read option and when rpos came it is comical how bad defenses looked.. ALOT of us were SCREAMING for Miami to get in on spread revolution but like a old school nebraska fan tied to triple option, we were willing to KILL the program to be "pro style bro"..
When Eagles won the super bowl I think in '18 beating Tom Brady/Belichek with a back up QB running rpo offense LMAOOO, then the pinnacle of just air raid offense DESTROYING NFL defenses was that Kansas city vs. LA Rams in late 2018, 54-51.. After that, everyone threw their hands up, man coverage went down and the adoption of Fangio two high took over, Staley ate off of it then the MacDonald/Minter blend Ravens with Fangio, experimented it in Mich. for few years, Won National title with it and both went back to NFL and MacDonald just won super bowl with it, only Rams could score on them with heavy TE usage, Minter now at Bmore..

This ESPN Shannon Dawson article mentions how it wasn’t just fans who wanted that offense;
Called it the scrappy insurgency of the air-raid and a few air-raid guys detailed how different pillars of the offense are still in our 2025 offense.
I think of the OCs we’ve had since Coker was fired; Fisch and Lashlee were easily the top two; obviously different styles and Fisch has been under a lot of different coaches since leaving Miami; but the name of the game is scoring points. Wee just need a good rhythm, avoid negative plays, and keep the ball off the ground. Before we could do anything else, we could barely handle that in the past years.
Interestingly enough, FIsch is taking over as OC after Washington finished 17th in scoring offense last year. Sneaky playoff contender…..If they make it and Alabama doesn’t; LOL. DeBoer will have a brick thrown through his window.
I do think there is something to how practicing against a certain type of offense can limit the ceiling of team altogether; so i like a mixing of the minds going on w/ new coaches at RB & TE + Mensah, who is on his fifth offense in five years, going on.
We had a lot of problems before Mario got here and they just compounded ontop of each other. I think what’s worse than anything else is that the leaders in the athletic department weren’t even focused on scheme specifics aiding winning compared to program perception.
I also wonder if the read option and RPOs being put into video games helped younger players who eventually made it to college / NFL understand how to defend it better. The last NCAA before the long ahh break, with Denard Robinson, didn’t have RPOs but it had read options so you could kinda learn how to defend it. Just googled it and madden put in RPOs in 2019.

Luckily our Run game can be conservative all it wants now that we have Mensah who is an high rate explosive passer

Yea they bring enough back that they should be really good again this year.. Hope we see them in playoff, we need that getback.. Only position would say not as good is QB but their offense is kinda plug and play, they are gonna run the ball behind good run blocking oline and rpo off that, play sound tough defense and out execute teams..

Man can talk bout this type of stuff and the trends all day, the peak of mid '10s with those Baylor offenses is incredible.. When trying to explain to people what was happening and you have Oregon and Baylor lighting it up and winning 10, 11 games annually and all they could say is they didnt win championships, its like my gawd we are talking about Baylor here, the fact we even mentioning them and championships is incredible! Oregon was dog walking teams with Jeff Maehl playing wide receiver lol, this is WILD. And it was always gonna be, when the big teams smarten up and run those offenses, watch out. Then 2019 happen and it was ending but went out with a bang with LSU finally adopting spread and all offseason getting push abck from their pro style bro fan base, texas game happened and they all converted, went into bama after scoring 10 points total in last THREE games against them and losing 8 straight, dropped 46 in Tuscaloosa LMAOOO.. We saw what that type of offense could do with elite talent, MELT FACES..
But like anything these schemes got by alot on novelty, being cutting edge, avant garde, or whatever you want to call it. Playing a unique scheme one off, is an advantage, but once your whole conference adopts it, it loses its advantage. Gus Malzahn said defenses would eventually catchup in his book over 20 years ago so he knew what time it is, but he rode his basic playbook from High school to highest levels of cfb, had nfl go crazy with wildcat and got ALOT of guys paid millions (Grantham, Lashlee, Norvell, Dillingham, etc.)
Anyway I still dont think MacDonald/Minter get enough recognition for what they did in the game and for them to come to cfb, treat it like a proving ground and work out kicks in their D to get a championship out of it and then go to NFL and already get a super bowl also is crazy. That is also why I am bullish on Hetherman year 2 install, when you look at some of the concepts he ran it was right out of their playbook and even though he said he wanted to keep things simple, you can see the crude similarities in what we were doing..
I couldnt find the exact same clips of the same blitz, maybe it was minter but seeing Hetherman running some of the same stuff is such a beautiful thing to see, I want to see tighter windows from our DBs and NO busted coverages, which I think discourage himfrom doing more of this type stuff.
