Background info:
Caleb Gaskins
Height: 6'8
Weight: 215lbs
Position: Wing
School: Columbus High School
EYBL team: Explores
Number: 11
Strengths:
- Shooting: Has a smooth 2 motion jumper; he can get it off contested, set shot, and off the dribble.
- Scoring: Already a solid 3-level threat, very good at locating open space with off-ball movement, punishes mismatches and zones
- Connection Playmaking: Selfless in transition, looks to make the right play, patient and lets the game come to him, solid passer especially out of short rolls and double teams.
- Beginnings of a post-game
- physicality: Not afraid of contact, can finish through contact,
- on-ball defense: solid on-ball defender, stands his ground on the perimeter,
- athletics: Great transition runner, but would like to see him finish above the rim more often for someone who is 6'8.
- Off-ball defense: A lot of ball watching, and slow rotations, could be a coaching scheme of staying home, not sure, but a pattern I recognized.
- Serviceable handle: Can bring the ball up and initiate offence at the high school level, ability to attack closeouts, some potential for higher iso level scoring
- weight: Would benefit him to gain 10-15lbs if his listed weight is true. should help with his interior defense and interior finishing at the next level.
- Aggressiveness offensively: Can look to become more aggressive, looking for his shot or attacking against scrambling defense, times where he would hesitate, then pass out of an open shot off a drive and kick rotation. At the next level, the windows become smaller,
How I see him at the next level (Next Year):
- I see him playing in at the wing or as a point forward and connector. I don't think he will become a traditional PF or an Offense Hub his first year. more of a perimeter player.
- Hopefully a 2-3 year player,
- 6-7th man bench piece, Coach Lucas should bring in a starting caliber forward from the portal for competition, won't be surprised if he is starting by ACC play.
- Will add great shooting and zone-busting play with his ability to score from all 3-levels.
- I trust Coach Lucas to figure out his strengths. This season proved that he gets the most out of his players but won't force a square peg into a round hole. With that said, it's also hard to project how he'll fit into the current offensive system.
- Should make his money on attacking close outs, slashing, and scramble drills offensively.
Bonus:
- Plays with his brother, who is a 6'9 freshman (class of 2029). If you watch any of the games, he wears the number 21. It could be an interesting prospect to keep an eye on. might be a 6'10 pf/c with playmaking ability in the half court.
- Reminds me a bit of Jordan Miller when at Miami, can see him filling a similar role.
