2026-27 Men's Basketball Transfer Portal

UVA has no HS commits and this is their first portal commit. They have a handful of seniors graduating. Interesting approach going forward over there whereby retention above all else is prioritized.

 


Upon further review, Baba Miller will need to get a waiver to play college basketball next season. He only played 15 games as a freshman at FSU and given that he is projected 2nd round pick, playing another year of college basketball will probably be attractive to him.
Miami should definitely sign another big but also pursue Millier and a waiver for him.
Miller would drastically change the dynamic of the team if he gets that waiver.

I would think he'd be considering teams that don't already have a 5.

IMO, you need to do all three well. Ideally, you want to bring in 4 high school or prep players, retain 6 or more guys who were in your roster and have 2 or 3 scholarships available for a transfer portal addition.
Of course, this is after losing 3 to 5 guys because of graduation, out of eligibility or turning pro.
As much talent as we once thought the portal had, it has dried up quickly.
Player development and roster retention are the most important factors to building team chemistry and consistency yet somehow, the transfer portal has devalued those two important team attributes.

He really doesn't have that much leverage given that he needs a waiver to play next season.
It's hard to imagine a school is going to invest $2M+ and guarantee him a starting spot at the 5 without knowing for sure he will be eligible next season.
Essentially, Miami should take a flyer on him after they sign another big to the roster. I would rather have 3 bigs and try to figure out how to play all 3 of them instead of having only 1 because I thought the other big would get a waiver.
 


His age means he has two years minimum at Duke before he can declare to the draft.

Sweet…apparently he was born and raised in Florida for a bit before moving to Spain. His dad played at Georgetown and worked for the 76ers. Man Georgetown basketball is deader than the year 4 al golden ‘canes.

The Dad was good at Georgetown but nothing special.

Hoya hoops are ***. I've had student tickets for 3 years and haven't seen anything good.
 
Well sounds like we are at the top of our budget in hoops according to Dmoney.

Hoping there’s enough in the tank for at least one competent backup big.

UM sets their own budget limitations, so make a one-time request to go over the cap, whatever it is.

Got a feeling it wouldn't be an issue in football signings.
 
ACC rankings until further notice:

1. Duke
2. Louisville (assuming they get OE Jr)
3. UVA
4. Miami
5. UNC
6. FSU
7. Clemson
8. NC State
9. Syracuse

FSU is more complete than 3-5; however, 3-5 have the starters and proof of concept. The age rule is good for college basketball because i hadn’t realized that Thijs De Ridder was a 23 year old freshman last year.

This is what I’m talking about w/ the nonsensical rule differences. De Ridder went undrafted in 2024 AND 2025; then just went to the college after. He was already a professional. If an American left early and went undrafted, he wouldn’t have gotten the luxury that De Ridder got.

I suspect UVA’s coach is holding so many spots open to bring in multiple international guys and they will likely be good so giving him the benefit of the doubt despite the squadron of seniors graduating. Their hometown hero PG is going to be a pain in the *** again next year.
