2026-27 Coaching changes and movement

Malone is the most accomplished NBA coach by a wide margin to shift to college. Obviously Jokic contributed a great deal to his success, but he's a completely different tier compared to guys like Woodson, Musselman, etc.

That said, you're either a relentless recruiter (like Jai) or you need to surround yourself with a staff that is, and that's going to be the biggest question.

Never coached at the college level but won a ring in the pros? Where have I heard that before..... Oh yes the unc football program.. How's that working out for unc?
Hot take; i still see BB building a winning team (no more below .500 teams) at UNC. Butch Davis had much more college experience obviously and went 4-8 his first year there too.

He’ll be fine imo. Probably be really **** good, actually. UNC brand is strong and he actually has personality. He will be much better with recruits than Hubie who is a traditionalist.

Buddy at FSU has a top ten class and he wasn’t even a NBA brand assistant coach.

I suspect his assistant, development and basketball operations staff will be full of Tar Heel alumni.

UNC didn’t get Caleb Wilson because Hubie was a relentless recruiter. They got him because before he went to NightRydas he grew up playing for Jet Academy and his agent is Kenny Smith’s son. Wouldn’t be surprised if Kevin Thomas goes to UNC.

and this is why it wasnt going to be billy donovan at unc

Don’t see how this is related in the slightest. If Donovan were ready to resign and go take the job, he’d have the job.

He wanted to miss the first week of the portal to finish his season because of some old fashioned occupation notions in his mind. He’s not that special to do all that and it makes him look like conservative traditionalist, stubborn in his ways like HB, while UNC looks desperate as other candidates allegedly spurn offers from them.

Still, I’d imagine Kentucky will pursue him again if Mark Pope doesn’t finish top 5 in the SEC & has a poor postseason, by their standards, again.

Goodman said UNC panicked

Of course, this was obvious by the fact it came after the Mingo de-commitment. That said, it was the better move to go with Mike.

Younger, NBA ring, doesn’t care to finish April’s bulls games with a tanking roster, and way more personable. He’s gonna be a really good one there.

The players that Donovan coached that he can use for recruiting aren’t as well liked or well known as Malone’s players; and Malone will be able to have more success on the international front. Additionally, Rick Barnes saying he coached KD at Texas or Kevin Young with the Suns are much better than Donovan’s invocation.

Still think he can succeed in college and wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up at Kentucky eventually. Idk why the bulls wanna keep him or why billy would want to stay through what’s likely to be a miserable rebuild.

Because the Bulls want to move him into a FO postion ala Brad Stevens?

Goodman is a tool. Donovan was going to make them wait and someone like Mark Byington wasnt going to galvanize the same level of enthusiasm.

They wanted to make a splash and did.

Was he mentioned anywhere?

I don’t like pro guys dropping down to college. There are so many things that don’t translate well, with recruiting alone
Think Tyler Hansbrough mentioned on field of 68 pod as a dark horse name no one was mentioning few days ago..

I don’t see any reporting that by trying to keep him in Chicago they expect him to be running the show, or that Billy would be open to that.

That’s not a bad idea if it happens but Brad was significantly younger when he changed paths & already had the nucleus of the championship team on his roster.
