2026-27 Coaching changes and movement

Billy Donovan at UNC wins the press conference but I don't know how good he will be in this era of college basketball.
His staff and their ability to recruit will be key.

Jai Lucas started a movement.
No prior coaching experience but has a reputation of being a good recruiter.

No movement has been started lol. . . Black coaches, usually assistants, are just labeled “recruiters,” because that’s how their worth is oftentimes perceivable & justifiable by many.

Plenty of lifelong assistants have gotten head coaching jobs before; whether or not they deserved an opportunity to be a head coach.

Tommy Lloyd isn’t leaving after making the final four. Idc what AZ’s money situation is; they’ll find whatever funds they need to find for the coach who takes them to their first final four in 25 years.

It’s going to end up being Billy Donovan.
Its not a money issue. Him and the AD arent getting along. They cant even be in the same room as each other. Word on the street is its him or her and its likely she'll be gone instead of tommy but all of us are on edge over it, which sucks because it takes away from this special moment in arizona basketball history

I see. Goodman didn’t allude to this at all. Yeah, I’d expect her to be gone instead of him—especially after yesterday’s win.

Why would Tommy Lloyd leave a program that gives you an unlimited budget, and he is already well liked? Arizona basketball is a huge deal, it's by far the most relevant west coast program.

The "Just a recruiter" label is also coded bigotry, because it automatically assumes that these coaches can't teach or lack tactical ability. It's the same nonsense when you hear someone say of a Black athlete "So and so is a freak athlete", while then saying a White athlete is "A gym rat that plays the game the right way". Never mind the fact that you have plenty of elite athletes that understand their sport in ways most of us couldn't dream(Lebron James is the ultimate example of this)

Tony Skinn isn't getting high end talent at George Mason, he is winning a ton of games with his ability to put his players in position to succeed.

Yeah; honestly, it’s nothing to do with UNC having diminished status or whatever media narratives are out there—it’s everything to do with the job he currently has….I feel the same way about Dusty May and other HM HCs that were floated by the media regarding UNC.

We saw the same thing happen with Kentucky whereby their top target in Scott Drew chose to stay at Baylor and Nate Oats at Alabama.

Moreover, it doesn’t help that Hubert Davis beat Coach K in the ACC tournament and the Final Four in year one, won the ACC & went to the sweet 16 two seasons ago and still got fired, as an esteemed alum in year 5, after losing Caleb Wilson to injury. So many of the names they’re targeting have never even made it to the FF.

The level of pressure at UNC or UK is unreal. Kentucky basically escorted Calipari outta town because of his lack of tournament success; however, if you look at his time at Kentucky (starting in 09) vs Coach K’s or Roy Williams’s time at Duke or UNC — the résumés are very similar. Doesn’t help that one of his best UK teams was during the cancelled COVID year as well.

Grass isn’t always greener. Much better off trying to be an Izzo at Michigan State type coach.
