Just to prove how important special teams is in college...

In the last 5 years Miami has lost 24 games and 12 of those games have been decided by 1 score or less.

The difference in punt return yards per game for the best team and average team is 20 yards. The difference in punting yards per game for the best and average team is roughly 40. Just on punting alone that's a net of 60 yards per game that you gain against an average team, which is roughly 4.5 points per game. The difference in field goal % of the best and average team is 20%. Do the math on average field goals per year and you get another 1.5 point difference. That's 6 points, maybe even more, that you can be better than the average college football team with deep focus on ST. Coaches pay OC's millions of dollars to find 6 more points per game.

That's the level you get to, and where we once were in the early 2000's, where special teams alone can eliminate the threat from average teams. Our early 2000 teams could win a game solely on special teams if the offense was floundering. That's when you are guaranteeing yourself 10 wins seasons.
