2020 Spring Practice Summary - 3/2

So wait...

If you have an upperclassmen at a spot that's injured, then you have several under classmen Red soph/Red Frosh/TF etc behind them & they're all high ranked players, that's the same as having a starter who's injured & all the backups behind him are mid tier players that are also hurt & then having to play a Walk-On?
Diaz and co gives out participating trophies and they have only got more emboldened with the jimmy Murphy walkon stuff last season. Remember they put ragone in late vs uva when we were in the redzone too and vs ga tech. Additionally take a look at Clemson they have had walk on’s play prominent minutes the last few years with renfrow and some in their back 7 on defense even over more highly regarded players. So I guess it happens but i don’t want to see ragone out there either on the base defense. Give me huff all day, don’t care if he’s a redshirt freshman or not. It is day 1 though so I dont Care that much

My impressions from watching the first spring practice today:

-We only got to see the first 30 minutes of practice and it was mostly only basic drills being shown in the viewing portion today. The last 10 minutes or so were competitive 1-on-1’s; no pads, just helmets. The plan is for practice to be fully open for media tomorrow, so should get a better read on things then.

-At QB, N’Kosi Perry and D’Eriq King switched off on first team reps. Perry led the day with the ones in warmups, but King started with the ones in competitive 7-on-7 play. They were followed by Tate Martell, Peyton Matocha, and Tyler Van Dyke in that order.

-Perry continues to show the best deep ball, and I found King to be the most accurate of the group; however, the Houston transfer had some bad luck on two dropped passes when going to walk-on WR Connor Byrne. From what I saw, Van Dyke seemed to favor WR Mark Pope and he went to him a few times on the day for quick completions. Van Dyke showed a strong arm with some zip today and looked every bit of his listed 6-4 216, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was actually bigger.

-LB Avery Huff is going to be a problem once he figures it out at this level. He’s put on some nice mass and seems to have kept most of his speed/athleticism.

-DE Quincy Roche is a listed 6-4 235 and looks it; he is very quick but he probably needs to put on another 5-10 pounds or so if he’s going to hold up against the run every down in the ACC and at the next level. DE Jahfari Harvey continues to develop his body and he was very agile in drills chasing down the ballcarrier to the boundary. DT Nesta Silvera looked a step quicker as well.

-OL was on the complete opposite side of the field from where the media was stationed, so it was hard to tell who was working where and in what order.

-Freshmen DE Chantz Williams and WR Michael Redding were out there, but were limited participants, as both sported casts on their wrists. S Bubba Bolden (ankle) was spotted doing work on the side. TE’s Brevin Jordan (foot) and Michael Irvin II (unknown) were absent, along with LB’s Tirek Austin-Cave (shoulder), Sam Brooks (shoulder), Corey Flagg (knee), and BJ Jennings (hip), RB Don Chaney (shoulder), and OL Navaughn Donaldson (knee).

-2021 4-star OL Michael McLaughlin was one recruit I spotted at practice. Former Canes KJ Osborn and Sheldrick Redwine were at practice as well.

Notable 1-on-1’s

-WR Jeremiah Payton made multiple plays, including an over the shoulder catch in the corner of the endzone.

-WR Dee Wiggins got a step on CB Te’Cory Couch on a quick slant and Martell put it right on the money; Wiggins did the rest and outraced Couch to the endzone.

-S Amari Carter closed quickly and skied to break up a pass intended for TE Will Mallory.

-CB Christian Williams established strong positioning and routed Payton out of bounds on one rep to blow up the play.

-WR Xavier Restrepo made a play on a quick out route, beating his man easily to the sidelines for a short grab.

First Team Offense (7v7, no OL)

QB – D’Eriq King
RB – Cam Harris
WR – Mark Pope
WR – Dee Wiggins
Slot – Mike Harley
TE - Will Mallory

Full First Team Defense to open practice

DE – Gregory Rousseau
DE – Quincy Roche
DT – Jon Ford
DT – Nesta Silvera
MIKE- Zach McCloud
WILL- Ryan Ragone
STRK – Gilbert Frierson
CB – Al Blades
CB - DJ Ivey
S - Gurvan Hall
S – Amari Carter

Thanks for the report. Seems like TVD had a good Day 1.

I already know Carter is gunna be the new Robert Knowles. No matter how much better Hall and Bolden are, Carter will probably play more than both.

Also Ragone better not be in for any reason other than injuries this year. Diaz and Baker are our LB coaches (Patke pretty much is too). And if they can't get the ******* lbs to play at a higher level than a walk on or they play him a lot anyways just like they did Knowles... Like what other evidence to you need they're bad coaches.

Run defense is a non-issue for Roche.

I'm all for Huff & Payton SZN. I don't think anyone was higher on those 2 on this site.

it seems obvious king is gonna start, but you think they continue sprinkling perry in with the 1s to keep him engaged and on the roster (i know hot take from only 30 min of viewing or so lol)
I'll keep saying it until it sinks into everyone's head. There is always going to be competition. You have to have competition to develop your players. You hear it from the coaches. You hear it from Ed Reed. King is expected/projected to be the starter. He has to earn it. He'll have show he is everything his past stats have shown.

All the guys have to compete to get better. If there isn't competition, how do you expect a player to compete in a game. What if someone is injured? You want to know that the next guy up can get the job done because he's competed at a high level in practice.

As Ed Reed has said many times, the toughest games were on Greentree. That's where this program needs to get to. You get there by competing with your teammates at a high level.

Idc that it’s the first day of spring, why is Perry taking reps away from King? Perry ain’t gonna start King should be getting every single 1st team rep throughout the spring and fall.

I think they’ll keep giving Perry some one reps mostly to keep up a ruse of “its a competition” and to make King earn it on a new team. Would be surprised to see that continue into fall though

I know after a cpl practices everyone was saying martell cant be the guy. Sounds like after day 1 u didnt get that vibe wit king

Patke is literally the LB coach and handles all LB/striker duties.

It is Day 1 of spring.
Ragone deserves to be the guy on Day 1.
Just based off last seasons rotation.
Rest easy.
Let see how our studs develop!
They will ultimately jump him.

Oh and let’s not forget he helped land King !!!!!!!
Give the man Day 1 just for that.

God forbid king gets injured. You want QB2 never getting any reps in a brand new offense?

He can learn the offense with the 2nd team. Kosi has been with these receivers for years, King needs every rep he can get to familiarize himself with everybody
