2020 Defensive Depth vs 2019 Defensive Depth

SDE - Gregory Rousseau/ Jaelan Phillips/ Cameron Williams/ Elijah Roberts
DT - John Ford/ Jordan Miller/ Jalar Holley/ Jason Blissett
DT - Nesta Silvera/ Jared Harrison-Hunte/ Elijah Roberts
WDE - Quincy Roche/ Jahfari Harvey/ Jason Blissett/ Quentin Williams/ Chantz Williams

Redshirt(s): Chantz Williams, Quentin Williams, Elijah Roberts (all PROBABLE, maybe one of them plays their way out of a redshirt this season but ideally they'll all be shirted if the depth ahead of them stays healthy).

Also, Rousseau & Phillips can/will both lineup opposite sides of each other frequently in packages this year, Phillips is essentially a starter, I just put him at SDE behind Rousseau because that's what his position is, but in reality he'll play on both the Weak & Strong side & rush from both ends. You can also move Rousseau around, he's both a Weak-side & Strong-side rusher & actually does significant damage lining up in the interior at 3-tech on 3rd downs. He's an all-gap rusher, doesn't matter which gap, A, B or C, Rousseau just gets to the QB.

And yes I know Blissett is moving to DE, but he will also play inside at times too, just based on depth & his skill set. The DE rotation is pretty heavy with 4-5 guys, makes no sense to log jam versatile DL's like Blissett & Roberts at DE when they can be interior rushers too.

WLB - Sam Brooks/ Tirek Austin-Cave/ Corey Flagg Jr
MLB - Zach McCloud/ BJ Jennings
SLB - Avery Huff/ Patrick Joyner

Redshirt(s): Corey Flagg Jr maybe.

Not counting Steed until he's back fully healthy, wish him the best though.

Striker - Gilbert Frierson/ Keontra Smith/ Keyshawn Washington (possibly)

Redshirt: Keyshawn Washington

My hope at CB:

Field CB - Al Blades Jr/ Te'Cory Couch
Nickel CB - Te'Cory Couch/ Marcus Clarke
Boundary CB - Christian Williams/DJ Ivey/ Isaiah Dunson

What will probably be the CB rotation:

Field CB - Al Blades Jr/ Christian Williams
Nickel CB - Te'Cory Couch/ Marcus Clarke
Boundary CB - DJ Ivey/ Isaiah Dunson

Redshirt: Nobody, can't afford to.

Now I know Ivey is probably going to be the starter at Boundary just based on how our staff does these types of things, but I really really hope they wise up & give Christian Williams & Te'Cory Couch fair opportunities to play. No reason to cut off our nose to spite our face if we have talented young Corners that can play & not play them.

FS - Gurvan Hall/ Avantae Williams/ Jalen Harell
SS - Bubba Bolden/ Amari Carter/ Keyshawn Washington/ Brian Balom

Redshirt: Keyshawn Washington & Brian Balom. Also hopefully Harrell isn't an Academic redshirt, NOT SAYING HE WILL, just saying I hope he doesn't have to be.

I don't think Balom or Washington are FS's, but we only have 3 upperclassmen & all the backups are TF's, so idk where Banda will put these guys, most of them are Strong Safeties IMO.

And before the debate even begins, no I don't think Bolden is a FS & no I don't think Avantae can play CB. Yes he has raw speed traits but go watch him at the opening in 1v1 drills & you'll see it for yourself, he's a Safety all day.

Overall, I think our Defense will be athletically better on all 3 levels, the question becomes will they play smart sound disciplined football in order to make up for the inexperience we'll have at LB & CB.

I think if we can solve the Boundary CB issue & keep our LB group healthy we'll have a **** good Defense, the DLine is the strength of that group, incredibly deep & versatile. If we can get back to creating immense pressure upfront it will make everybody else's job easier.
There is no more slb. Huff is at will and Joyner likely at mlb. And interesting on bolden. I think his skill set is more of a fs. He is more of a rangy cover guy and hall is a better fit at SS in this defense than bolden imo

The 2020 defense will be faster than 2019.

The question will be physicality. Quarterman is a big loss.

I totally agree regarding the 2020 defense speed. On the other hand, Zach McCloud has always been a big hitter. I think the physicality will be there.

Bro what have you seen from Miller that would make you suggest starting him over Nesta ? You must be related to him lol.

I'm not related to Miller but I do live in Jax so I pull for him, also 1 on 1 blocking..... Miller stuff the run

So my question to you is.......What have you seen in Nesta or Ford that would suggest them starting over Miller

Are both Steed and Jennings medically ready? I thought one was butt knot the otter.

I don’t think it’s even a lukewarm take to expect the 2020 defense to be better than the 2019 defense. I have full confidence in that statement.

And just in case anyone forgot, the 2019 defense was 14th in the country in YPP allowed.

Even if you don’t believe the defense was as good in real life as those numbers suggest, pairing an equivalent (and IMO better) 2020 defense with a D’Eriq King led offense should really have everyone excited.

The d looked completely different with Bubba at safety and moving Carter down to the box on pass downs. Tbh that’s where he belongs.

Bubba and Hall at safety will cover up mistakes. I’m looking forward to watching those two.

I always felt McCloud was out of position at SAM when he was lined up in the slot. I HS he was in the middle and thrived. I liked Shaq but he had some moments where his lack of burst hurt him.

I hope that Baker cleans up some of his calls, but the defense on paper I believe is better than last year.

We lost so many games last year by 1 score with that trash O going 3 and out or turning it over. Also our kickers hitting under 50%!

10 wins is a must this season.

Health (key) & experience at Safety will help make up for the lack of experience (at times) in the middle. But I expect our defense to be better overall. Shaq and 56 had some awful 4/5 tackle games during their time. I got love for both. But, I think we are going to see what a real sideline to sideline MLB looks like with these younger cats. We gave up quite a few big plays simply because Shaq couldn’t get there. We’ll miss him in some ways. We’ll be much better in other ways.

Bubba struggles early cause he missed so much time but around the FSU game he really started to get it going. I’m really excited to see what he can do with a full fall camp and being healthy this year.

I agree Carter is the 3rd man in the rotation and should be an in the box safety for blitzing and stopping the run game. I wouldn’t be mad at them giving Avante Williams some burn early on and see if he can be the 3rd guy by mid season.

The 2020 defense will be a lot deeper than the 2019 defense. If the guys returning from injury can stay healthy the LB depth will be night and day. This team is still lacking depth at CB but overall this defense should have fresh quality players all game.

I'll trade speed all day for Quarterman's physicality. He was only physical when the ball carrier met him straight on. He could not get off blocks, get out on sweeps or tackle in space.

I’m a big fan of Shaq and what he brought to this team and program for 4 years. With that being said, I saw the future with Brooks flying around in the bowl game. We finally have some backers with speedddddddd. McCloud will be good enough to hold down the middle. Now you add in Huff, Brooks, TAC and you start seeing some athletes again at that spot.

I didn’t realize we still had Amari Carter here. He feels like he’s been here forever.

I still hope to see Amari Carter slide down to LB. Could be the Ray Ray Armstrong type.

Can cover read and hit people. I’m a fan.
