Looking back at Oregon that year they lost to Auburn by 6 to start the season. Oregon should’ve won this game easily. In the first half they had two redzone drives produce 0 points. One drive they dropped a TD and missed a FG. Then right before the half they fumble a qb-rb exchange and Auburn takes it 90 yards and almost score. They led 14-6 at half and 21-6 mid way thru the third before collapsing like Miami did vs Michigan St this year.

Herbert threw for 242 1 Td with 75% completion for the game But sucked in the 3rd and 4th qtr. Seaking of the 4th qtr, with 6 mins left, up 21-20 Oregon had a crucial 4th and 1 that Herbert had to sit out for because he got injured the previous play. Mario still goes for it but they cal a run play out of the shot got but they got stuffed. They trade empty drives the next couple of possessions until the last Auburn drive. Bo Nix played great, with no timeouts he led Auburn down the field and scored a TD with 9 seconds left to win it. That Auburn team went 9-4 including beating Bama when Mac Jones had all 4 first round Wrs in the Iron Bowl 48-45.

After that game they win 9 straight including blow out wins vs Colorado, Arizona. They beat #25 Washington 35-31 and USC 54-24 both on the road before losing at Arizona State by 3. In that game Herbert threw for 304 2 Tds but 2 ints on 55% completion. Not a great Arizona State team. They went 8-4 and beat FSU in the bowl.

Oregon won the next 3 including vs #5 Utah in the PAC 12 championship game 37-15 and the Rose Bowl vs #11 Wisconsin 28-27.

All in all Oregon was beating teams they were supposed to beat including USC. In the games decided by 10 points or less they went 4-2 including the bowl game. Won all the others by 10+.

Herbert on the season threw for 3471 yards 36 Tds, 6 INTs, completed 66% of his throws on 428 attempts. In the losses he made too many mistakes but when he was on he looked good.

Oregon as a team that year had the 41st ranked total offense and 55th ranked total defense. For comparison Miami was the 105th total offense and the 4th ranked total defense. Oregon went 12-2, Miami went 6–7. It was Marios 2nd full season as a head coach after taking over for Willie Taggart in the bowl game the prior season. Manny was in his 1st season as a head coach but he was here for 3 years prior as the DC.

I’m not sure what next season will look like. The defense is a nightmare. We have 0 depth and need all the talent we can get. The offense could be elite if we nail the OC hire. We have TVD, plus rooster, don, Thad, Bronson, the smith bros, George, Restrepo, Mallory and Arroyo at the skill position. At OL we might need 1-2 portal guys but we should be able to have a good starting 5. Nelson, Rivers, Clark and Campbell can play. If Sacife wants to come back and get coached up that’s 5 plus Walker, McGlauglin, Seymore, Rodriguez as young developments guys. The roster has enough talent to win the coastal, we saw that this year. Beyond that it’ll depend on how the roster looks next season.

Regardless it’s a great time to be a Cane. We should be able to stack top classes every year and bring in great coaches. The rest is up to them. As fans, we have no reason to not pack Hard Rock every game and support these young men. I feel for guys like Chickilo, Duke, Deon Bush, Artie Burns, Chad Thomas and all those other kids who came here in the past. They could’ve made the smart decision which would’ve been to go to Bama or some other place that would’ve given them everything they needed to be successful. Instead they came here and got coached up by amateurs at a school run by weak people with no vision. No more of that. The U is gonna be the place where these athletes will get all the support they need to reach their goals. Finally we can sell that instead of chains, weather or paradise. What a time to be alive.
