2019 Defensive expectations

The fact that a good amount think we will be in the 25-30 range should tell you that we should be worried.

Top 25 tells me we're solid. Top 15 if we don't have injury issues. Either will also prove that the scheme is legit.

Bonus: offense should be top 40 regardless of who we hire

Also, something that I don't get. People complain that we were a top 5 defense as a result of our cupcake schedule... What's the bar for success then? Doesn't get much better than top 5, especially considering that we played against two offenses every game...

Now we know the scheme is remaining unchanged for the most part, we have an experienced, young, and agressive play caller much like Manny.

What are our realistic expectations in 2019 for defensive performance? What is a success or failure for Baker?

I think it's fair to assume a small drop off with Mike Jackson, Joe Jackson, Willis, Redwine, and Jaquan leaving

I think a top 20 defense with top 5-10 in TFL and sacks proves that Baker was truly the right hire
Two things working against rankings - you lost your best defensive players not a lot of experience to step in and
you played some bad offensive teams this past season

We lose 9, 4, 99, 22, 28....the rest are easily replaceable.

Yea need the following players to step up -

Willis - Nesta

Jaquan - Amari Carter

Joe Jackson - Greg Rousseau

Redwine - Gurvan Hall

Mike Jackson - Ivey, Frierson, or Blades

We have the talent, they just need to develop

1-2 years of growing pains , 9 months will not fix this .

Kids will be wide eyed looking for hope and gratification things will improve. Then confidence will build then they will buy into new mindset and we start winning again.

BRACE YOURSELF ON THIS ONE

Does anyone think Blissett, Holley, or Munoz will get any meaningful reps this year as true freshmen, or do we redshirt all three?

I believe this defense will be similar to the 2017 team defense with a lot of unknown. I think other than Bandy and Redwine the secondary played sporadic at times. Michael Jackson regressed looked out of place at times but I liked what I seen from D.J Ivey and believe he will be a Miami great before he leaves. On the defensive line i believe Rosseau will be a welcoming addition with Bethel being a little more involved if he benefit from the strength and conditioning. I hope that the linebackers get it together because I think they were a week spot especially against any running back coming out of the backfield on routes, they looked slow diagnosing plays and also could benefit from strength and conditioning. But this will be at least a top 20 defense with bumps and bruises at the beginning because of the learning curve of new players.

The defense will take a step back this season, Miami ranked #5 in total defense. I expect in the 30ish range because of the new faces.
