2018 Official Scholarship Offers

Iowa State offered 388 kids this year.
Louisville 340
Miami 145
FSU 142
Bama 215
LSU 217
Florida 237
Stanford 32

Stanford is not allowed to give offers unless they are admitted to the school

And somehow Stanford fields good teams while our academics keep us from getting the players we need to win. That ranks up there with thinking we can't win without criminals because they're the real savages.

There's not really another school like Stanford as far as academics and sports though. It's not like they are a national power either. Like winning MCs. But what they accomplish is impressive given what it takes to get in there. But again they aren't getting kids from sofla neighborhoods either. Lol

Stanford has access to many fewer athlete than we do as evidenced by their offer list, yet they've won more than we have for years. This indicates to me that the key to success on the field may not be letting in dumber kids or kids who get into trouble all the time. Yet every time we pass on a kid or kick him off the team because he gets in trouble off the field (Bruce) or for academic reasons people start moaning about how we'll never win that way.

True. I'm not one of those though. I like the idea of running a tight ship. There plenty of really talented kids who are willing to do things the right way.

This is how you know who has an actual offer and who is faking it. The "uncommitable offer" bozos can come here and clear their empty heads of that fallacy.

As far as combination of Academics with Athletics - Cal, Notre Dame, Duke, and USC are all right up there with Stanford. Maybe just below, but they're close.

Sure, but here's where somebody starts yelling about championships. Real, football championships, basketball is a different matter.

Academics and Admissions are two different animals.

I wasn't talking solely about football. But still, I mean Cal produces a lot of NFL talent, even if they don't win all that much. Only Duke isn't good at football, but they have Basketball.

Those people don't really care about these kids beyond their ability to produce on the field. They're the first ones to call someone a JAG or say a schollie needs to be pulled without ever seeing a practice.

Ya, they aren't our kids. We want to win football games. How is that some revelation or surprise?

That wasn't to say it is how it should be. It is simply the reality. Like i said, these are not our children so there is a disconnect, and these are not kids in middle or high school. They are adults that could be sentenced to death for making a life mistake, or die face down in the muck for their country on another continent. If people don't like the unfortunate side of getting involved in a highly competitive, multi million dollar industry, perhaps scholarly pursuits are the better option than athletic ones. It is a cut throat business, not a young adult development program. If you cannot provide results, or are detrimental to the direction of the team as a whole, you are gone. And people really shouldn't be getting too up in arms about it frankly.

I respect that perspective and it definitely holds a lot of truth, but doesn't excuse disregard for young men just starting out in life because they may not be able to run/pass/kick exactly how (we)'d like. To a large extent a scholarship offer is a culmination of the work the kid has put in thus far as well.

Some act like the scholarship is some gift bestowed on the kid when it is really the school taking a chance and making an investment on the kid and vice versa, the school inherently holds all the power in that relationship by design. If the kid over performs he doesn't get anything extra, but if he underperforms he may be tossed out. This is a fan board so naturally not the most welcome crowd for this argument so I digress, but acting like the witch hunt after some of these kids that happens here is okay because they have a scholly is misguided imo.

There's obviously a disconnect between what we want college football to be and what college football actually is. And by "we" I mean the NCAA and by "what we want it to be" I mean what we pretend to care about but really don't.

I'm not surprised about what some white folk think about black kids, but as a black man in a world designed to exploit and oppress black men I see them differently. I wasn't making a revelation.

Just because they turn 18 doesn't mean they're any less human. Adults make mistakes just as much as kids and turning 18 isn't some clean slate than negates their childhood. You're objectifying but that's fine, just don't get indignant because someone points to the "reality" of these kids' dispensability in the minds of people who can't identify with them.
